"Dropped in to Castlemaine as a stopover on a trip to SA. Decided to try this small Italian style cafe for their coffee but ended up having a light lunch as well. Coffee was fantastic, and the service friendly and efficient. Great spot to stop and relax. We sat in the courtyard area at the back but we could have also sat inside the restaurant itself although these seats are limited. Great experience."

"This is the email that I sent to the owners after our dreadful evening and they have not had the courtesy to reply to me so they leave me no option but to post this here.......I booked a table for 17 people for dinner last Friday night which included interstate guests attending our wedding. I informed the young lady taking the booking that I spoke to, that there would be seven children attending.I said that we would be there between 6 and 6.30 and was told that children were most welcome at your establishment. There were two reasons that I mentioned this fact, firstly that the children would need to be fed promptly and secondly to give the kitchen a time line to work with. The children and their parents are regular diners at some of Sydney’s finer restaurants, as I mentioned when booking, so our expectation, from your extensive advertising, was that you would be able to provide a dining experience that was somewhat better than we would expect from the local hostelries. We were happy to be seated at the long table and all seemed to be going quite well.I did notice that there were only 3 other couples in the restaurant at this early hour. The waiter took our drinks orders and one of our group, on having read the menu, decided that the easiest way of feeding the young people was to order steak and chips for them - both of which were items on your menu. This was done so that their order would be given precedence, make the service easier and this would give the kitchen an opportunity to fast track their meals. We were content to talk amongst ourselves and were prepared to wait for our orders to be taken. One of the guests asked some for bread and was told that it would appear soon. After some time I left the table to look for the waiter and ask where and when we could expect the bread. He immediately attended to their needs, approximately 45 minutes after the initial request.Shortly after this, a confusing mixture of entrees and main courses started to appear. When my main course finally arrived I enquired where my entree might be. The waiter had no idea so I suggested that he leave the meal with me and continue to try and make some sense out of the rest of the orders. The next two plates to arrive were my entree and my partners main course. This confusing scenario was repeated along the table. Then the desserts arrived - or rather parts of the desserts arrived. A chocolate pudding with rhubarb was ordered but only half made it to the table - the rhubarb had mysteriously been omitted from the offering. When challenged, the waiter notified us that ‘The children weren’t having rhubarb and that we could have cream (if we wanted it)’. At this stage Fawlty Towers appeared to be normal. This meal cost in the order $850.After discussing the experience with my guests after the meal, our expectations of what might have transpired were not met, and I might say that I felt somewhat embarrassed at recommending The New Northern."

"I've never taken the view that food is simply fuel. It can be a profoundly pleasing experience. This business is run by Carlos and Karen Florenca and is well worth a visit when you have a little time to look around. You can do your shopping for fine foods and also have a meal. Among the groceries, try their easy to spread blue cheese and ask the girls to recommend something interesting on which to spread it. Their choice will delight you. Carlos is Portuguese and is a gourmet butcher. He has set the bar high, at excellence. The chef, Fabrizio, is Sicilian and one of the most conscientious cooks in town. He'll come and see you and find out whether his food was okay and that you enjoyed it.Just for the first time, before you get around to Carlos' espetada (giant flame-grilled kebabs) ask Fabrizio to make you his bacon and eggs. The toast is always different and quite delicious - usually a sourdough. The bacon will be grain fed and crisp.Take something home from the meat counter - try the Cumberland sausage and the Portuguese sausage.Maybe take your Mother there for a Mother's Day breakfast - she's going to love it and think you are so clever for finding this interesting spot."
