"Kakaroto has easily become my favorite sushi restaurant in the bay area (after Daigo). Went for a date night with my boyfriend recently and the food and service were both top notch. The staff is always so incredibly friendly and attentive. The food during our last visit was amazing!! I had a dinner box that came with sashimi and my boyfriend had a bento box. I have to say that the fish in my dish was so fresh and absolutely delicious. Our bill for 2 people with dinner, anappetizer, miso soup, salad and 2 drinks only came out to less than $60 which is a steal in the bay area. This will definitely be our go-to sushi place when we're craving some fresh sashimi and rolls."

"I wanted to like it to support the shop but it was okay. There were parts that were tasty but when we got the bill, it was not worth that much. We ordered a ramen tonkatsu. The pork and noodles were great but the broth started to taste too salty after awhile. The seaweed around the sushi seemed hard to bite into, I guess I like crispy seaweed. My brother got a bento with mackerel and tempura. I took the shrimp, it had a nice crisp and taste to it. After the first bite of mackerel, my brother got a fish bone and that ruined it for him. He gave it to me, I added lemon and ate it with rice. It was pretty tasty. We ordered a spider maki, seemed not enough soft shell crab. Our favorite was 85, it had a lot of different fish. The Umami was ok, the veggies in the sushi were not our favorite and the poke seemed flavorless. Service was nice."

"If the price was not an object, Kappo NamiNami would definitely be one of the best restaurants around. It is a completely fresh takeover of Japanese for Californians who grew up in Japanese-as-sushi roles The kito-style small plates pack a potent taste stamp that shocks and wakes the taste buds and offers perfected culinary creations in small packages. The beef tongue stew $18) each raves over is definitely as good as I heard and a must try plate. The juicy and soft meat makes for one of the most pleasant meat dishes I had from late and is quite hearty. The tiny Aalsuppe $8 I think, but I forgot the name) is very interesting, has a wonderful broth, and the translucent whole baby aale are fascinating, but you only get about two ounces of it. It only leaves you down when you finish it in a short order. The cabbage rolls were surprisingly lacking in taste, but the sea bass with monk fish liver and Ponzu sauce was certainly not for them. The liver could be a little strong for some, but the half-sweet Ponzu sauce was one of the best sauces I tried and forced me to lick, small dish it came to clean. The waitress brought us in instead of black cable in fog sauce, and the tofu was just OK. With a beer and a big will the sum was $90 and we were hungry enough for ice. Nevertheless, I think I will be forced to pay too much for a little meal here again. UPDATE 06/03/2007: I have been back twice since my first review and am a little less upset. I have discovered some great new dishes, but also some too many disappointing. The cattle tongue continues, but some of the white fish were a little too bland and let me say, "Hmm, interesting", more than "mmm, grandios". The Mogwort Tofu was an interesting green with a strange Gooey texture, but also some Blande. The duck mango was very tasty, with a great sweet sauce and really tasty, though not tremendous duck. The green tea chicken was also delicious, although the chicken breast was a bit dry and the green tea-bread breast was good, but not better than you could expect for a crust like this. The cod and daikon were very good. It was soft, fat and slightly sweet. Much better than some of the other white fish. I think if I can really nail what I want to do and not get many more “hmm” dishes, then Kappo NamiNami can be worth it again at the price. But his disappointment, that there's a bunch of more ho-hum dishes to get there."
