"Several restaurants in this rural area serve traditional Amish style meals, but there is absolutely nothing more authentic than dining in a private Amish home. Yoder's offers that memorable experience. Located a short distance from Shipshewana and accessed by a narrow unpaved road, the spacious home overlooking Cass Lake is purpose built with a large kitchen and a great room that doubles as a banquet hall and community meeting space. There is no electricity kitchen appliances are fueled by propane and gas lamps are brought out at sunset. In case you're wondering, yes, there are modern restroom facilities. We were warmly greeted by the Amish couple that owns and operates this business. Dining is by group reservation only (contact Yoder's for referrals to local tour companies that visit here regularly). The banquet hall is simply furnished but spacious and immaculately clean. A sliding glass door opens to a patio with an idyllic view of the lake. Our group was promptly seated at one long table. The meal was served family style and everything was home made, cooked from scratch. Baskets of freshly baked bread and bowls of preserves and remarkably creamy peanut butter awaited us as we sat down. Following a crisp green salad with cheese and bacon bits, the entrees and sides arrived all at once. There was baked chicken, meatloaf, corn, mashed potatoes with gravy, and noodles. Everything was simply prepared but hearty and fresh, blossoming with natural flavor. The Amish excel at baking and their desserts are typically ethereal. Yoder's served us 3 kinds of pie cherry, pumpkin custard, and peanut butter. Can't decide? Well, we sampled all 3. Jars of preserves and other items are available for purchase. The multi generation Yoder and Miller families are proud of their traditions and the local businesses they own and operate. They made us feel welcome and gladly answered our many questions about the Amish lifestyle and customs."
