"We visited after researching nice country pubs and thought that for a special occasion it would be a nice place to celebrate. Our visit was for my mother in laws 70th birthday. The food was really nice, home cooked, hot and fresh. The service however, really did let this place down. It wasn’t busy, but took a while to get our order, the waitresses were not at all friendly and didn’t engage in conversation or even smile. There was no atmosphere. We asked one of the waitresses if we could light some candles on the cake, she said she would check and come back. She didn’t bother coming back at all. They also had a board with the desserts but no prices and then added 10% to the bill for a service charge, which they obviously knew they were getting anyway so didn’t make any effort to be friendly or even smile. We didn’t feel welcome and it really did spoil her birthday celebrations. Finchingfield is a beautiful village and we would have come back in summer but unfortunately not to this place unless they sort out the service."
