"We went to Brae for our wedding anniversary. It had been on my list for years, and this was the perfect reason to tick it off the bucket list. I had read many reviews, so knew the standout would be the accommodation, which didn’t disappoint. It was modern, spacious, and relaxing. Very lovely. However, I wasn’t sure what to expect regarding the food based on what I had heard from others. Disappointingly, we were underwhelmed by the food. I’m not quite sure how to explain it, other than we only loved 2 of the dishes, and we didn’t finish a few dishes because they weren’t very nice (even basic things, like the bread and home made butter). Some flavours were strong and overpowering, and other dishes were bland the balance was off. There were limited non alcoholic drinks on the menu for those not drinking. In our view, our lunch was certainly not worth the price tag, and I’d be spending my time and money at other fine dining restaurants instead."

"There were certainly some standout, highly memorable, imaginative and enjoyable dishes. Could I personally agree with the much vaunted ranking? No. Was it because the head chef was absent on the day? Possibly. Could you argue that the (otherwise delicious) bread was taken to far and slightly burnt? Yes. Service was friendly, well informed, nicely paced. Did Brae give me the same buzz as Attica, Vue de Monde, Quay (to name but a few Australian competitors)? No. Would I travel interstate to visit again? No. Is it wonderful to have another Australian restaurant ranked in the top 50? Yes, absolutely. Can the ranking be justified? One so rarely agrees with professional reviewers in any of their expert fields, so I can definitely say for me as an amateur, Brae outperformed at least some of its more highly ranked overseas counterparts, and underperformed others. If you've got the money and the time go right ahead."
