"After a few days break in Bewdley, we we’re greeted and treated so lovely as tourists. Everyone said hello, so so friendly that we will definitely return. Sadly on the day we are leaving we stopped for a final coffee. 11 months since contracting covid, I still have long covid which has left me with debilitating parosmia, which in turn has completely altered my ability to taste. I have had to give many of my life long loved foods, but just do my best to get on with it. We arrived at this cafe with our suitcases (perhaps that was the issue? and I asked for an oat milk latte. I always check the milk used because I struggle with everything barring one that I can tolerate the taste of. When the server said the milk I politely asked if it was okay to use my own milk. It was an abrupt no, I wasn’t asked if it was due to allergies, intolerances etc it was just a flat out cold no. I could have just ordered a black coffee and poured in my own milk but to be honest it made me feel a little sad to be treated like that and then watch as locals came in to be greeted with big smiles and couldn’t do enough for customers, attitude. Rather short sighted as I was happy to pay for a coffee and the milk, then use my own. Instead I sat without a drink whilst my husband drank his. Not even a suggestion of “would you like a black coffee do you can use your milk at the table”. Such a shame and in my eyes was completely unnecessary. On the flip side a local workman came in and overheard part of our conversation about needing to collect our vehicle and he misunderstood and thought we couldn’t afford a coffee (I said I couldn’t sit and wait for my husband without a coffee and would have to leave as I wouldn’t be rude and take up the space of a paying customer he immediately turned around and asked to buy us coffee and said he knew what it was like, wow a huge lump in my throat the kindness of others. We declined of course but it means I’m leaving Bewdley with a smile on my face. We are in an economic crisis, businesses are fighting to stay open and money is not free flowing. I also didn’t choose to be sick, so I would really think about the way you treat visitors, a morning spoilt over begrudging someone using their own milk. What a shame."
