"I keep returning for the vegetarian meze (starter) selection (available from two persons) - a huge feast-like meal for two, though rather greasy as many of the meze are deep-fried. (Hence, on long dinners on crowded nights like the new year's eve your clothes will also smell accordingly afterwards.) As this is Switzerland, the meze are not cheap - but you will not leave hungry. The service has always been friendly and the quality has been consistently good for the past roughly 15 years. If I lived closer, I would also make use of take-away as I've seen some customers do."

"It's a friendly and very humble little place. No fuss no frills. Menus limited but food traditionally tasty. On the number of occasions we went it it wasn't busy but became very busy especially for the food area. Mostly locals use it so that's why we like this kind of bar . It's very clean not trendy just swiss."

"The Schützenmattpark is rather centrally located, only about 15 minutes walk from the main train station and hence a favourite haunt for families and young people who love to sunbathe, grill or play games on the lawn. Quite a bustling place in the smack centre of which lies a wooden pavillon led by an Italian guy who obviously takes pride in the fact: whether you will enjoy a latte macchiato, cappuccino or hot dark brown Italian-style chocolate in the morning, insalate, pannini or other Italian and Mediterranean dishes for lunch or ice cream and thick slices of chocolate cake (fresh from the oven if you are lucky) in the afternoon, the place makes you feel like you landed on a piazza somewhere in the south rather than a park in Basel. Children are very welcome and families hence have no qualms unpacking their bananas, yogurts and stuff to feed to their young'uns while enjoying a macchiato at the same time. You can sit outside on the sunny side of the pavillon all year round, the shady side is only open during the hottest summer months. There are also a few tables inside."

"I lived in this neighborhood for close to 8 yrs but never ate here until I came back on a business trip. The place was decorated to the hilt for Christmas and empty, except for me and another couple (a Wednesday night). When this type of thing happens, it makes you wonder about the quality of the food you will be served but it turned out to be quite good. I took the house special steak on a hot stone with three sauces; fork tender sirloin, crispy fries and crunchy seasonal veggies at a price more reasonable than something comparable at the more snooty places in town. The Christmas decor was a bit overwhelming (enducing Elf on a shelf flashbacks) but I didn't regret finally stopping in."

"After a cozy meeting with old friends we had appetit after a nice piece of meat with supplements in traditional atmosphere. in the riehentorhalle we found a beautiful table with textile napkins. quickly the waiter was to place and after a short time the ordered beverages stood on the table, two times beer and once mineral water were in the open. afterwards we ordered the food and red wine, a beautiful gamay in the semi-liter bottle (excellent!) we ordered cordon bleu maison and kalbsbratwurst with rösti. wonderful. there were various variations offered with cordon bleu, we chose the simplest, maison, i.e. with a mirror on the piece of pork. there were fresh pommes. everything wonderful and at a price you have to look far and wide. very attentive service. it is an old restaurant in which many fasnacht companies start and run. pretty colored glass panes with traditional depictions. the only minus point was that only one urinal worked and the water in the toilet was available only cold; Here would be less rustic a profit...Immer still a secret tip and all a way worth it."
