"My husband and I, and two English friends, had a delightful meal at “A Côté” on Thursday, and would thoroughly recommend it. We all chose as our main course a tarte made with shoulder of lamb and vegetables, served with crudités – not a dish that I had ever heard of but it was delicious. The weather was very, very hot and I asked for a bottle of artisanal biere blonde 1000 (trademark a cow or bull’s head) from the Brasserie du Plateau at Croze, which was a perfect thirst quencher. The newly converted café cantine is tucked away in the basement of the fabulous newly converted development of buildings “Les Maisons du Pont”, which also incorporates nine hotel suites, a spa and a bistrot gourmand, “A La Terrade”. Like the bistrot, it has a riverside terrace with attractive views over the Creuse. We didn’t sit there because it was too hot, but will do so another day. We opted for the cool of the café interior. “A Côté” has a deliberate retro feel to it and one could almost imagine Simone de Beauvoir and Jean Paul Sartre deep in conversation at a table tucked away in a corner. The staff were friendly and efficient, with colourful uniforms that added to the ambience. The prices were very reasonable and the food appetisingly presented. We think the cafe cantine is a real asset for Aubusson, providing a midday meal which is not too filling but feels somehow ‘special’ ideal for tourists or local people who prefer something lighter than the gourmand menu on offer at ‘A La Terrade’."
