"The restaurant was very nice, although it wasn't quite the fine dining experience that was indicated. The Korean pork belly was perhaps a little too fatty, but the Japanese pumpkin was fantastic."

"TL;DR: Burgers done in the old school style, right out of a neon-orange truck. Tasty and filling, the budget snack satisfies in a way which is difficult to find nowadays and even more hard to describe. This is one of those times to prove going simple is effective.

Influenced by some travels in North America, Mr. Burger was set up by a couple of friends whom were looking for a way to launch their new business after a long period of experimenting and finding what was right. This success on the streets of Melbourne led it to expand around the city, and that success has drifted up north to sunny Queensland. Which is where we are today.

With getting here, it was a combination of luck and being opportunistic. For a few weeks, this van was parked within UQ's St. Lucia campus somewhere between the Schonell Theater building and across from the Eleanor-Schonell Bridge busway. Bright and orange, this thing could not be missed. There were many other students who - presumably - shared the same thought process as I did lining up to get the burger. First time around that I noted it was here, I had already eaten and walked by it while the second week I had this as a fall-back position just in case it was available; lo and behold, here it was again. Before heading off to language class, it was time to get a bite to eat and being an opportunist, I went straight here when it opened.

With the truck, this is one that is hard to miss when walking by or even from across a football field. It is a small truck (though not in height), smaller than most ones I have seen, but the bright colours and clashing aesthetics are enough for it to get noticed. To the customer right of the ordering window the menu is in bright pastels and simplistic in design to make the ordering process quick and efficient.

Which leads us to how the service is. For how straightforward the process is, and how basic the aspect of a food truck is, all of it is done quite well and proficiently. The crowd varies with the lining up, but nevertheless it is a process where you go up and order then give your name for them to call out when the order is ready. With the kitchen in plain view, the fry cook works hard like a dog and organises all the aspects very well to put as many out as possible in one go. The burgers are always being flipped, the salad is always being arranged, and when orders of fries are done the sound of the oil is loud and sizzling. There is something truly dynamic in how simple all of it is.

When it comes to the food, they keep it really simple. All of it is about burgers, and all of them are pretty straight forward. It is about the quality of the ingredients, and the way they interact with one another; more is less they think, and it shows using them as an example. They also offer fries, sometimes spruced up and also a few drinks - milkshakes (with flavours slightly different from the norm) and Boylan sodas. The menu is pretty small, with less than a dozen choices all up, and at this location it was even smaller and select. With this aspect put in place, the operations are able to be much quicker and streamlined with the effort put in to show it all.

Out of what was available there, it was none other than the moniker order that I had. This was a burger with a beef patty, some cheese, then lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickle with a trio of sauces in mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup.

With the offer right there, it was no doubt that I was going to get a side of fries with it. And especially when they were spruced up like they were. The Trucker Fries - a serving of fries topped with bits of chopped bacon, a trio of American cheese, and their signature house sauce. How on Earth was I going to resist that?

Combined together, this meal was substantial enough. The burger is not what I would call a huge one, but with the quality and density of the ingredients - particularly the meat patty - it was a solid little thing. Essentially, it was the bar for how a burger should be with the beef patty taking center stage followed up cheese melting on top and just enough salad to give it a bit of freshness but not detract from the juiciness of the meat. The pickles added their signature vinegar kick, and the trio of sauces melded together really well giving mustard's tang into mayonnaise's creaminess into the signature aroma of tomato ketchup. The bread roll was soft and solid, and a perfect fit to wrap it all up.

If anything, the fries are pretty recommended as well. These trucker fries were really delicious, and could do as a snack on their own terms. The fries part of it was well cooked, with an occasional crispy bit here and there, and they held well against the heavy sauce. It had cheese melted into it, which was hot and delicious, giving it off a bit of a bite. This was almost like a gravy, the biscuits and gravy style one. As good as it was, they could have cooked the bacon a bit more and made it crispy; some bits did not seem to cooked.

Overall, Mr. Burger does deserve quite a bit of recognition. It strips the humble burger back to basics as it should be; when you feel like a burger, that is it and the page-long selection is more overwhelming than anything. Also, that tends to try and be too many things to too many people - and that strays from the original goal sometimes. Right here, what you see is what you get and the burger is done as it should - some tweaks not withstanding - and it is right out of a food truck. All of it to indicate that the philosophy and attention to the meal decides how good it is in the end, and Mr. Burger does well enough.

Just put the 4.0 rating as an indicator that it matches what it is aiming to do well, and has enough aspects about it to give it a recommendation. Also, the food truck comes across as it should be - not pretentious in the least, and serving the honest food - which gives it a major advantage.

With Brisbane, and Australia in general, being so saturated to the brim with many burger places what Mr. Burger does is a sigh of relief in many ways - regardless of how it compares to the best that is offered. For once the price is right, and for what you get it does not feel like you are being shortchanged either. Also, there is little meddling with what is already a perfectly concocted snack - the burger - giving only a few choices, and each one essentially being "back to basics". For a quick bite, and one that is satisfying along with being a good level of quality. It just goes to show the fact it is served out of a mere food van that all the wizz-bang gadgets and innovation are not necessary for making a memorable burger. All that is needed is a good fry cook, a solid baseline of customers, and word of mouth does not hurt either. All of it is present in Mr. Burger's van, and you can't teach that."
