"We have always loved this place. We have known him for over 20 years. After a drop in level due to the retirement of the owner, the restaurant has resurfaced. Go for it. You will not be disappointed."

"The hotel may not present well but once inside the ancient walls the staff and ambiance are perfect."

"Prices well beyond the proposed kitchen. Insipid dishes, frozen, even mogettes are beurk for a restaurant vendéen it's a comble. Obligated to claim for the duration of the meal, the bread, the carafe of water, butter, wine. A completely outdated boss. Only positive point a beautiful shaded terrace on the edge of the water"

"Most restaurants appear to close in Coulon on a Monday evening so as L'Atelier Gourmand was one that opened and was rated on TripAdvisor, we opted for that. I had booked a table in the rear courtyard and it was pleasant as it was a...hot evening. The courtyard was full and it was a nice atmosphere, but the large parasols that were still up made it a little airless. Service was very good and the fact the waiter could speak a little English and us a little French helped interpret a fairly limited menu. A bottle of Muscadet was reasonably priced. I started with the Degustation plate that had a selection of most of the starters available and bread was readily replenished. There were no particular highlights on the plate but it was all tasty. My wife was somewhat stumped to choose a main course so opted for the entrecôte steak served with a roquefort sauce and small potatoes. The steak was a very big portion, most of it tender but there was some gristle and more chewy sections. It was cooked medium as requested. She declared it fine but couldn't finish her meal saying it was more functional than memorable as she needed to eat. I opted for the Porcelet which was belly pork in an apple and cider sauce. It was very tender, a generous portion and I really enjoyed the sauce. It was served with various vegetables including asparagus and carrots and was probably the best choice of the evening. We passed on dessert, paid the bill of just under Euros and headed down to the canal for a glass of Pinot des Charentes as everything else in the sleepy village was closed by"
