"I arrived late at the hotel and opted to eat in rather than venture out in the cold and darkness. Upon seating I concluded I ought not to have high expectations of the meal. The decor and service were certainly not especially encouraging. Well, what...a surprise I received by the absolute quality of the dish I ate. I chose steak and fries , as described in the menu. However the meal was far superior than the basic description of the menu. The steak was gorgeous , beautifully cooked and presented. The chips were rustic and equal in quality to the meat. Even the tomato and mushroom accompanying the dish were delightful. The whole meal was fantastic and something I rarely do, but was compelled to do, was to ask to speak to the chef so that I might praise him personally. All in all, the meal far surpassed my expectations."

"This beautiful cafe in the agnew park at the stranraer seafront is very popular with local and with tourist through. callum is the chef and his wife magda leads the cafe/bistro. it is affordable and very good quality eating here, with a meat or vegetarian menu available and some gluten-free options. or they can only choose a coffee and a cake or a scones. many customers outside when we visited, with bikes and dogs welcome. huge parking near and public toilets."

"The Thornhill Inn is in the center if Thornhill, a fairly quiet Scottish town. We came to have dinner with friends and family following a sad event. For us that fact that the pub was quiet (I think that our table was the only one in there) was perfect. It meant that we could all catch up and was almost akin to private dining. The staff did well accommodating the various order requests (children’s, starters, mains etc) for a party of 10 so that it all arrived hot and in time. The food was good (my salmon was lovely and cooked correctly). The children’s look great and the other food delicious. The staff left us alone, which was great but can when we rang the bell. For us it was perfect, but perhaps not the venue for a rorcous night out."
