"It was a cold, wet winter’s day and the Bearded One and I decided to take a drive out the the Perth Hills to check out the Parkerville Tavern. We weren’t going to let the downpour deter us from our lunch date. On the drive out through the hills we spotted a number of kangaroos grazing in paddocks and even pulled over the watch a female kangaroo with a joey in her pouch. The drive was a rewarding lead up to a fab lunch. The Parkeville Tavern has an interesting history dating back to the 1800s, which you can read about either on their website or on the feature wall at the pub. We were going for the food and the fireplaces, of which there are two. You can’t beat a toasty warm fire on a chilly wintery day. The service is relaxed and friendly, but still prompt and professional. There’s no table service and you order at the bar. The menu offers standard pub classics such as chicken parmigiana, steaks, burgers, and sandwiches, but also some specialties such as lamb shank with mushroom ragu, beef and Guinness pie, and black Angus meatballs. I chose the bangers and mash wth onion gravy and wilted spinach, while the Bearded One opted for the beef and Guinness pie, served with chips and salad. Both meals were exceptional and hit the spot. The two large pork sausages were perfectly cooked, the mash creamy and smooth. The flakey pastry lid on the pie was crisp and golden brown and the steak melted in my mouth, the Guinness gravy dark and richly flavoured. The Parkerville is a family friendly pub with a welcoming atmosphere. It is warm and cozy in the winter and has an outdoor area that would be awesome in the summer months. Definitely worth the drive to dine at this historical little tavern."
