"We’ve been visiting Sao Bras most years for the last 12, thanks to a close friend owning a villa on the outskirts. We’ve certainly seen the town change, for the better I might add, in that time. Better in the sense that as a visitor, the choice, and quality of places to eat and drink within the town have all improved immeasurably in my view. Coupled with the general improvements to the square, such as the introduction of the fountains and the free public wi-if, Sao Bras is generally a better place to visit than it was ten years ago. Himalaya Gurka has been around for a few years now, but we’d never ventured in. I guess that a nepalese-run sushi restaurant in a small Algarve town didn’t sound quite right to me, so it never quite made it on to our list. Towards the end of this year’s two-week stay we’d been to all our usual haunts at least once, and decided, based on the small number of TripAdvisor reviews to try Himalaya. I am sincerely glad we did. Firstly, we eat a fair bit of sushi back in the UK when we can. We don’t live in London, so good sushi is not easy to get. But we visit London frequently and have eaten in Nobu, Zuma and Roka many times. In my opinion, they serve decent sushi, but the price tag reflects it. Himalaya is not Nobu or Sexy Fish. It’s a clean, air-conditioned fairly basic Sao Bras eatery. Perfectly charming and a nice enough environment to sit in. The staff are lovely. Friendly, helpful etc. Now the food. Again, it’s not Mayfair Michelin-star, but what it is is freshly prepared (definitely), well presented more than acceptable sushi. Lots of choice, from nigiri to a variety of rolls and everything in between. And it’s “all you can eat”. Don’t let that put you off. The general thought might put me off, unless you’re just looking for maximum value for minimum pay-out. It’s actually good. No, really good. Less than €14 for as much sushi as you like. From a value perspective, unbeatable. I’ve paid more than that for two pieces in London. Forget the value aspect for a second, it’s actually just good food. So we ate a selection of sushi to start, which we were more than happy with, but because we hadn’t over-ordered (noting the waitress did ask if we wanted more) we also sampled two of the Nepalese curries. One chicken, one prawn, both with fluffy white rice and a dal on the side. Utterly delicious. Perfectly spiced, with generous meat fish in each. In summary if a) you like sushi and or b) you like Nepalese Indian Thai and c) you can get over the fact for a second that you are in a small town in the Algarve and your head is saying “you shouldn’t be eating this here”, go. Go. No really, go. It’s bloody good. My only regret is we didn’t try it until the penultimate night of this year’s stay. See you next year HG."
