"When this restaurant first opened it prided itself on its good cooking and variety. The proprietors claimed to be trained chefs. There was a good variety of choice with very good salads to accompany the meal. As a vegetarian it was good to have a varied selection. Now, there is just a choice of curry or two other dishes, if they are actually available. This choice of curry has become a popular option on pub menus, but it shows a lack of imagination or consideration. Last niggt I ended up with singed nut roast a very tired option) and conventional vegetables instead of something tastier with salad. There is normally a vegetable lasagne, but they had not bothered to make any. A very limited and dull selection. They also started out offering old fashioned, but fun deserts such as peach melba and banana split. Not any more!! A shame that they no longer make the effort to inspire and attract. The Welcome Stranger has become the ' I can 't be bothered. '"

"Beautiful food and lovely surroundings. The fish and chips was absolutely divine and service was brilliant from start to finish. We visit tonhampstead regularly and had never eaten here… we will certainly be back! Have to mention the lovely member of staff who saw my...two year old son had just woken up (busy day) just as our deserts were about to arrive and offered to rustle him up a little something from the kitchen. So kind and greatly appreciated."

"We stayed for 2nights on a dinner and b&b package. The dinner included 3 courses which on the menu was around £25pp. The first night was fab. Food very hot, fresh and well cooked. Generous portions. Staff quite mixed tonight. Breakfast was mediocre. Hot cooked to order and was OK but quite a wait on refills at the continental buffet and juice regularly empty. Second night dinner wasn't as good but still OK. Staff were more cheerful! Menu was the same which was a shame but still a choice of around 6 dishes. We ordered the venison rare and sirloin medium, both a £4.50 supplement. However the venison came very well done and the sirloin very rare! The manager waived the supplement charge after we asked. All in all very good value and good portions, hot etc just sometimes a bit over done."

"A group of us had here on Saturday the pleasure of a special combat evening event and was made to feel really welcome (emma well done! by all staff, a well organized brilliant night in a pub with a great friendly atmosphere, good beer and great pizza!"
