"I 'm not sure why I never realized this place was here, since I 've walked through New York Food Court so many times. But somehow, it caught my eye today. A bao zai fan (clay pot rice) place? Yes please! Unfortunately, it wasn 't very memorable. I went for the classic combo listed on the menu. For $10, you get the classic bao zai fan (Chinese sausage and pork belly), as well as a cup of soup and some spicy wood ear mushrooms on the side. They take an extra $5 for deposit and return it when you bring the clay pot back to them. The bao zai fan itself was just okay. The clay pot wasn 't the usual clay pot with a lid and was closer to the sort of stone bowls used to serve Korean tofu soup. The pot itself was just lukewarm, instead of being piping hot as it should have been had the rice been cooked in the pot the whole time. This place simply serves a normal rice inside a warmed pot. And that 's why the rice never really got that nice crust that is the signature of bao zai fan. Without that, it 's just rice with sausage and pork belly on top. The sausage and pork belly itself was standard, nothing interesting. I prefer full sausages instead of slices, but that 's just me. The sauce was okay, but they needed to provide more of it. The soup was actually pretty decent. There was a large piece of super tender beef bone in it. There was some soy beans and pickled cabbage, giving some depth to the flavor. It 's just like the soups my mom would make at home. The small side they provide was a cold spicy wood ear mushroom dish that was pretty good. It was a pretty small portion though."
