"The Chippery in William Street in the back part of an old bank building – still retaining the Chubb safe-room where once upon a time all the goodies were locked away – is a gourmet fish and chip shop catering for take-away and dine in...– the latter in a tiny space of around five tables, as well as a pretty set up in the aforementioned safe room with seating for 4 or so more at an aquarium table. There is also a couple of high tables and stools out front for a spot of al fresco dining. It is unlicensed – no room to store alcohol anyway – but quick to produce good quality stemless wine glasses and ice buckets where required. The menu, of course, is fishy – fish and chips, salt and pepper squid, chilli crab, oysters, burgers, tacos and chips. We kicked off with a cone of hot chips, with habanero salt, and slathered with jalapeno sauce and chopped jalapenos. Big serve – one more than enough for two – hot, crisp chips, creamy dressing pimped up with the chilli, very good. They also turn out similar cones of chips with parmesan and truffle shavings; Belgian style with curry ketchup and mayo; and cheesy chips with parmesan, mayo and black lava salt. Will be back to try them all for sure. Onto our mains – first off, peri peri prawns – a generous serve of well-cooked prawns, served with their tails, sweetly fleshed and firm, mildly spiced peri peri sauce, accompanied by salad, rocket, shaved fennel, olives and an abundance of roasted pine nuts. Nice. Then a couple of soft tacos – filled with chopped red cabbage, charred corn salsa and the star of the show, crumbed whiting fillets – crisp skin, inside moist and tender, with a mildly spiced sriracha infused mayo. These were very good. So, the Chippery and Co. is one out check out for sure – very pleasant waiters, service was prompt and friendly, and the food of good quality. I will definitely be back."
