"Better wear good walking shoes and come hungry to the Auberge de la Moissière, a veritable magic mushroom of an inn hidden in the woods. Chef James Stanzer, a Frenchman, his first name notwithstanding, retired from the rat race of Michelin starred gastronomy to open this remote haven of edible delights. The only way to reach it is to hike for about a half hour down a rocky trail into a canyon, cross an old stone bridge, and amble on, like hungry Hansels and Gretels, to a 16th century farmhouse. From the moment Monsieur Stanzer greets you at the door the edible adventure begins. It 's a strictly seasonal four course prix fixe meal, at 41 Euros, one of the gourmet bargains in the Western World. The menu is set at whatever the chef dreamed up that day, no selections, but he is understanding and will make provisions for some (but not all) dietary particularities. Vegetarians had best seek their sustenance elsewhere. This is a meat friendly menu, including guinea hen bathed in a lime and ginger sauce for amuse geule (the appetizer before the appetizer) the very thought of which still makes me salivate. the main dish was a filet of beef in a wild mushroom sauce topped with foie gras. Desserts are a sweet extravaganza. Our meal include samplings of creme brule, a custard pudding, wild berries and tartes as lovely on the plate as they were sliding down the gullet. Having overheard us speak, the chef surprised our son with flashing sparklers poking out of his sweet plate. Definitely one of the most memorable locales and meals of my life."
