City: Intramuros, The Manila Hotel, One Rizal Park, Ermita, Manila 0913, Intramuros, Philippines
"Though the name sounds very Filipino, Mabuhay Palace is in fact a luxurious Chinese restaurant. Praises to Manila Hotel for having maintained and preserved its reputation as a five star hotel despite being the oldest premiere hotel in the country; and Mabuhay Palace is a deserving and reputable addition to its high status.

It was a pleasure being in this restaurant for the very first time. Many thanks to Zomato Philippines in collaboration with Manila Bulletin (specifically, Cruising Magazine) for inviting me to this feast.

The physical structure was very impressive, particularly the mural designs -- the walls were adorned with intricate decorations of jade and other gems that seemed to tell stories. The rest of the place, from tables to lights to the general ambiance, gave an elegant feel of an authentic Chinese restaurant.

The dishes served, from the simplest to the most detailed, and from the traditional to the neo-classical, in the most basic description, were all delicious. All of them reflected the technical skills and talents of the chefs in carefully cooking the food and plating them in a very appetizing manner. These included the following:

1. Fried Wanton Wrappers. Looks could be deceiving, as this starter item tasted really good, thanks to the drizzling of honey that complemented the slight saltiness of the crispy-fried wanton.

2. Long Life Prawns. Tender, flavorful prawns wrapped in fried noodles and with three different dips: hoisin sauce, mayo and syrup with peach.

3. Steamed Sea Bass in Celery Sauce. This dish was perfect, being a fish but without the fishy odor and taste. The fish was adequately cooked and exploded with juice and flavor.

4. Yang Chow Fried Rice. Though cliche since yang chow was already a household term, this restaurant's version eliminated the need of a viand. It tasted much better with the addition of the chili sauce.

5. Braised Spinach Tofu with Baby Abalone. This was the vegetarian and fiber-rich part of the meal. The abalone had the texture of tender meat, and the spinach tofu tasted a lot better than the ordinary Chinese tofu.

6. Salted Duck Egg Ice Cream. The name itself was intriguing and interesting. This was, in fact, the most sinful item served relative to its size. The salty and powdery yolk matched the vanilla ice cream base really well, reflective of the current trend in dessert that combined salt and sugar as exemplified by the very popular salted caramel.

7. Mango Iced Tea. Mabuhay Palace's signature drink, the name spoke for itself: iced tea with mango. It was very refreshing and appropriate for the succeeding dishes."
