"Enjoyed a delicious Sunday evening meal at this atmospheric pub to celebrate our last night in beautiful (and wet! Weardale. The food was excellent as were our conversations with the very sociable and welcoming hosts. Just the best place to be on the first night after clocks go back and it's dark by 5pm! Thank you for making our very elderly Jack Russell so welcome too."

"I have eaten there a few times. Today I went for the vegetarian option. Cauliflower schnitzel and new potatoes. A baked aubergine and tomato gratin (it was called something else) asa little side. Basil oil which I asked for in a separate bowl. Sounded exciting....Big mistake! The gratin was nice, but the cauliflower was too soft, maybe it was precooked, cooked to death and now water logged. The potatoes tasted as if they had been left in Luke warm water for a couple of days. I felt ill after. The Cajun spice on the cauliflower was the best not. All in all the blade of beef would have been the more traditional but better option. It is a shame when a chef doesn’t take the veggie option serious enough. Veggie food often requires skill and great care and I couldn’t taste that today. I love that pub and the service, the interior, the staff as always is top. So three stars still, but please cook the cauliflower with love and a little care in future."

"A relaxed, friendly restaurant with good quality food, reasonable prices and attentive service. Following a recent lunch visit, we recommend the following dishes: Chicken nachos (the nachos are more like crackers, but fine . Complemented very well by the accompanying sweet jalapeño jam, and cooling guacamole. Goat's cheese and Bruschetta. A substantial starter. Cumberland sausage and mash. (Dreamily buttery, super-smooth mash. The onion gravy was nice, but we'd have liked a little more. Three bean Chilli. Pleasantly spiced and very filling. Sticky Toffee Pudding and Custard. (Drenched in toffee sauce, which was very thin and runny but tasty . The 4 stars would have been 5, but for the custard, which, like the toffee sauce, was very thin indeed, so the sponge was awash in runny sweet liquid. Not bad, but the nicely made pudding deserved a much thicker, rich custard. We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit, and will certainly return. Thank you to the talented chef, and hard-working waiting staff."

"Used this place for years. First time back since new owners took over and it will be the last. Portions were poor but more alarmingly had a long dark hair in one of the battered sausages and a hard rock type thing in one of the chips. What a shame. Used to like the food here."

"Fabulous find after a nice long dog walk at Hamsterley forest. Lovely home cooked food in a very well presented pub,friendly helpful staff. Dog friendly but also restrant area which is free of dogs if that's a concern."
