"One of a kind experience, excellent service Sergio provided. The three course we had was delicious I would recommend this place for a special date with your love one, they would enjoy it just like we did. One more thing if you have kids they have kids menu with a great selection for your little ones. Wonderful dinner with my wife on her birthday!!!"

"First off. Carnal 's food is INSANE! there is no debate about that. Our first and second experiences at Carnal were totally consistent, incredible food, beautiful presentation, and great pro level service... so good. Great cocktail program too.So naturally we wanted to bring our friends to experience this beautiful wood fired food. Our experience unfortunately was really poor. Initially making the rezo we were informed that any changes to our group size we would be charged $20 per person, if we were late our reservation would be cancelled and we would be charged $20 per person. I get it but definitely not the warmest way to lead up to our outing: we were almost late, lol and kinda stressed like they won 't cancel on us if we are like 5-10 mins late will they? We were on time: Our server was not very warm or welcoming. We were expecting/hoping for some enthusiasm for the food, how we should order for a family style meal with a party of 8, sell the food a bit..... give us some direction...we are ready to share plates and order what you tell us basically!Carnal has a very small menu so we were wondering, what should we get two of or three of? ...kinda just wondering how do your suggest we do this? Our server was busy and didn 't really answer our questions but informed us that we would have to place our entire order for the night all at once or it could be up to an hour and a half wait if we order more later.so we just sent it and ordered pretty much the whole menu to share bites with each other. No complaints, the food was all incredible.Our third round of 4 beers and 1 cocktail didn 't come and after 25 minutes we asked the server what was up. He got really flustered and said he had forgot. He said do you still want them? I don 't have to bring them out because we were basically done dinner at that time. We said yes and then proceeded to wait literally another 10-15 minutes for the drinks to come. We could have lingered longer and ordered more food but decided to finish our drinks, pay the $600+ auto gratuity (including the 45 minute beers and go get some slices of pizza at Goat Mountain.Overall its an example of the kitchen executing beautifully, knocking it out of the park! and wait staff just dropping the ball on many levels. The service is an integral part of selling this food, and when service is poor/not friendly/not knowledgeable it does not justify the cost....I would not be bringing a group back to this restaurant....I would have hard time staying away do to our previous experiences and the incredible food, but after all the talking it up that we did, none of our friends have any interest in going back.Vegetarian options: some beauty options for wood fired veg! complex! full of umami!"

"The only reason that I tasted any of what I ordered was that I had not eaten anything prior to its arrival at the table. But, the whole thing started when a couple who came up after us went in and got seated, I asked what's going on. She said we weren't on the list. She nicely assured me that we would go next, no matter what. I will always wonder if our name had been ignored, crossed off in error or pronounced incorrectly and/or so softly that we didn't hear it as we patiently waited on the sidewalk for 15-20 minutes. We followed the blonde-haired guy with the soft-shaped handlebar mustache inside and out onto the sort of enclosed patio. He walked so quickly that we didn't get even a wisp of any ambience the regular room might have. I immediately noticed that a group of eight who had gone inside way before still had not ordered, and then that a group of four came in to be seated after us. I also noticed that the couple who had been seated right ahead of us (who had walked up to the door after us) had not ordered. So I decided if either of those two large groups had their orders taken before us, we'd excuse ourselves and leave. That didn't happen, thank goodness, so we ordered. I got the two-egg breakfast with bacon and substituted a pancake for the toast it comes with rosemary-garlic roasted potatoes and honey-cured bacon. He got a hamburger and substituted the potatoes for potato chips. A $10 burger with potato chips! He also ordered a Coke which took forever to arrive and then was taken by the guy who seated us to the table with the eight people. He blamed his mistake on the fact that he was still sort of new. Good grief. New folks ought to try even harder. He certainly had a bias at the front door, walking out and looking and making eye contact only to his right or straight south on NW 23rd, as he announced names. With city traffic sounds all around on a typically busy Saturday, he should have been louder and looked all directions. The food came quicker than I thought it would. I knew I was in trouble when I cut into the pancake. I've never felt that texture in a pancake. He knew he was in trouble when he saw the grease on the plate beneath the burger and the grease-soaked brioche bun. Both of us ate because we were very hungry, but neither one of us enjoyed it very much. The honey-cured bacon can only be described as fried to a practically-burned-crisp. The potatoes were tasteless no rosemary, no garlic flavors anywhere. I'm the reason we stopped there I’d walked by before and seen the crowds, so I figured it must be good. Why else would so many people be going there? Well, I'm here to tell you, I will never again be lured into a place by a crowd of strangers. I'll rely on actual people that I know who eat at establishments before I decide to give them a try. Finally, I didn't think it was possible to find such bad food in Portland at a local establishment. I've been proven wrong, woefully wrong."
