"I went to the Cafe Randwick with a friend, the service was terrible. We waited for 30mins to be served, during this time other diners arrived and were served before us. Not impressed by the lack of attendance and we were unable to get the attention of both wait staff. We were tired of waiting so we left. I definately will not be coming back anytime soon. Appalling customer service in a popular spot."

"FOOD TYPE
Italian

FOOD QUALITY
Four of us dined on a busy Saturday evening in late June. We started with two shared entrees: the “funghi gratinati” - that’s mushrooms filled with herbs, spices and cheese - and the baby calamari; and two shared salads: the basic seahorse and the caprese, which has tomatoes and bocconcini. For my main, I chose my fav, spag bol. My wife choose the the veal arabiata off the specials board, and our friends stayed with a seafood theme, choosing the Atlantic salmon and the fettuccine marinara. The salads were fairly simple, but neatly presented and with smooth dressing sauces that were subtle and not too overpowering. The baby calamari was fresh and succulent and the mushroom dish was a pleasant surprise: two large mushrooms, topped with melted cheese, herbs and spices. Portion sizes were smallish so we didn’t fill up, which was just as well, because the main courses were tasty and delicious. My spag bol was perfectly cooked just the way I like it, with the spag soft and chewy, the meat flavoured with a hint of spice and soaked in a rich “napoli” sauce. My wife’s veal was tender and flavoursome and our dining companions couldn’t praise their food enough: the salmon especially was beautifully prepared with love, care and attention to detail: a decent piece of fish well cooked and accompanied by a selection of nutritious vegetables.

ATMOSPHERE
This is a long established restaurant, that’s clearly built up a solid reputation among the locals. We arrived at 7pm by which time there was already a fair crowd, but by 8pm there wasn’t an empty seat in the place, which gave it an energetic and lively atmosphere. It retains a fairly relaxed and laid back ambience though. Decor, after so many years, is a tad dated with the 1990s style timber floors, wood and steel furniture, white walls with some photos featuring the local area, dotted around the place. Tables are neatly laid with crisp white napery and stainless steel cutlery, giving it a touch of elegance and class.

SERVICE
Our booked table was ready and waiting for us in a nice spot in the centre of the restaurant just behind the bar counter, but I couldn’t help getting the feeling that the maitre d’, a tall gent with a greying beard and glasses, was a tad jaded perhaps after so many years running this place. There was just a hint of impatience and irritation in his demeanour, as we dithered a bit before making our choices. The two ladies on duty though were polite and friendly, although service was patchy. One salad came out, followed about 10 minutes later by the other salad and the entrees. Then followed by a long and tedious wait for the mains of about half an hour; just a little bit too long for my liking. I guess one needs to make allowances for the fact that they were busy, although I have been to other restaurants that have been equally busy, but there was no long wait for the meals. Perhaps they need to increase the staff complement in the kitchen to speed up the throughput on weekends.

COMFORT
We were quite comfortable at our table, which was large enough to easily fit all the dishes. And I have to give these guys credit, because, unlike so many other Syd restaurants, which simply fail to cater for our chilly winters, the temp inside Seahorse was pleasant and warm, creating a homely and cosy atmosphere. To quote from their own website: “Beautifully warmed for these cold winter evenings and air conditioned for hot summer days.” Thanks for that, guys!

MENU
The menu is a smart looking document with plain sheets enclosed in plastic, and bound in an attractive leather cover. It’s clearly laid out and simple to follow.

TOILETS
There is one disabled toilet downstairs and separate male and female ones up a short flight of stairs. They’re quite dated, but clean and well provisioned, although the 1980s style hand dryer in the gents is well passed it’s used by date and hand towels would be a lot quicker and easier.

ACOUSTICS
Tables are well spaced out and most diners here are well behaved and quiet, so despite all the wood concrete and lack of carpets or any other kind of noise absorbers, we had no trouble conversing.

COST
With our Ent Book card (25% off up to a max of $30) we paid a reasonable $134 for four of us. That included corkage at $4 each, two salads, two entrees and four mains. No desserts or coffee. That’s pretty good value for an upmarket restaurant in a busy part of town.

BOOKING
Definitely recommended for weekend dining and to be safe probably best to book for weeknight dining as well.

PARKING/ACCESS
Seahorse is situated in the heart of The Spot, opposite the Ritz Cinema. It’s always busy around here because, apart from the cinema, there are also numerous restaurants, cafes and coffee shops, making parking unfortunately a bit of a chore. We usually drive straight past, head along Perouse Road and turn into Howard Street, where you can usually find an unrestricted “spot” (‘scuse the pun).in the evenings.

SUMMARY
The food was simply presented but fresh, tasty and with clearly only the best quality ingredients used. The ambience is lively and fun but without being overly rowdy or noisy, making for a pleasant and relaxed setting to enjoy a meal. Having dined here a few times before we knew what to expect and were not disappointed, except for the service which was too slow and we found the the maitre d’ a tad abrupt."
