"This is one of those places with heart and soul. The Red Kitchen not only has great organic coffee, but great organic eco-friendly food at very reasonable prices. It markets itself as Salt-of-the-Earth cuisine, based on traditional recipes from around the globe. The menu is modest but Red Kitchen prides itself on sourcing the freshest local ingredients: meat from animals which are ethically raised, free-range eggs, and sustainably fished seafood. While not vegetarian or vegan, RK nevertheless caters to that clientele and also has offerings for those with food intolerances. There are take-away options, and they cater for functions. I had Baghdad Eggs with Za’ater & Mint, which was basically a healthy serving of scrambled eggs on sourdough toast sprinkled liberally with what tasted like dukkah (they mix and grind their own, and sell packets of it). Tasty, and filling, but perhaps a little dry? I was hoping to get to the home-made cakes, which looked delicious, but in the end I couldn't fit one in. RK should also be commended for its environmentally friendly practices: composting, using recyclable packaging, green power, water saving devices, natural cleaning products, and energy efficient lighting etc. etc.In style, RK is small, quirky, casual, boho-chic, and clean, with friendly accommodating staff. It's in undulating Wentworth Street, which is worth a visit in itself for the other quirky, retro places springing up: and the view over the steelworks, and the Illawarra Escarpment. Port Kembla (originally Red Point) has had a rough trot in recent years, owing a great deal to the downturn of the steelworks, but it's full of character and characters. It's not trendy, or picture-postcard perfect, but in my opinion is much more interesting than the 'Gong."
