"I wanted to introduce my sister-in-law to Scotch. A very knowledgeable barman made recommendations and gave us tasting notes on a nice selection from the pub's good range of Scotches. He was very helpful, and the pub is a comfortable place to have a dram or four."

"Wow, what a wonderful surprise! We booked this because so many other restaurants in town were full. We wanted to celebrate our anniversary, and we stayed at the Balmoral in the past, but not had dining at any of the restaurants. We were not disappointed. Our waiter, Andrea was fantastic. He was from Italy and he was so endearing and knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the dishes and the wine. The halibut was melt in your mouth. The lamb was tasty. Olives were as good as any Spanish restaurant. Their special gin and tonic with their Balmoral Gin was a perfect apéritif. They gave us a nice cozy booth. The music was a little loud but we were next to the bar. It was very fun. The service was impeccable. So glad we decided on this in hotel gem! It made our 26th very special!! Thanks!"

"The open sandwich was so so, not awful but not great. On top of the alcoholic drinks I asked for two glasses of tap water. When the bill came I was charged nearly £3 for bottled water and also charged 10 service charge. The menu states that a service charge will be added to tables of 6 or more, there was just the two of us and we were charged this extra fee . The attitude of the mature woman who served us was offhand and could learn how to smile. We live beside this place and have not been in for years and now I can see why. Never again."

"Love the Traverse theatre where we have seen a number of excellent productions over the years. This year decided to have a meal in the bar. It was a real disappointment. Not only did they mix the order up and served in piecemeal but the food was really poor with the exception of the chips. It would have been a one star review but had a really nice pint to offset the food."

"On a cold wet night approaching 10 o'clock, when so many of the restaurants were closed, we retrahed our way from 30 years and found the cafe royal still open amazing ambiente, excellent eating, knowledgeable staff this was a special experience introduce to a new whisky glengoyne 10 year old from our waiter high we are recommended next time again in the city"

"My overall expectations and experience of this place over the years has deteriorated, just like the standards and experience you have when you go in there. Nothing welcoming, grumpy staff, and obviously arrogant owners which you can certainly tell by the not so positive or constructive responses they have made from the negative reviews. Within the Edinburgh Gay community they certainly don’t support and welcome us as their local customers. It’s a Pity they every took over CC’s."
