City: Binmaley, Dagupan Binmaley Rd, Dagupan, Pangasinan, Philippines
"Ah, a Japanese restaurant in the heart of Dagupan. For an authentic' Japanese restaurant, New Leaf is over-decorated with fake cherry blossoms, empty sake bottles, unlit paper lanterns, and thick abaca ropes slithering down from the ceiling. You'll immediately recognize that instead of a Japanese zen atmosphere, you're actually in a borloloy-laden Filipino restaurant. No tatami mats. No wooden sandals. No taking off your shoes. And no sake served. A quick browse on the menu immediately catches your attention unto what authentic' Japanese dishes are absent from the menu like sakuraniku, nigiri-zushi, unadon and sake among others. Instead, something like Sisig Donburi and Ripe Mango Shake stick out like a sore thumb. There goes your Japanese restaurant authenticity. I ordered a Matcha Ice Cream and a Seafood Ramen not knowing really what to expect. I asked the service crew to serve the ice cream immediately since the ramen takes 10 minutes to prepare. Crew were quick and well-trained. I was immediately served a complimentary hot tea and the matcha ice cream. Tea was nothing exceptional. The ice cream was mediocre. Then came the seafood ramen in a huge bowl. It had imitation seafoods like squid balls, crab sticks, and fish cake. It also had authentic seafood like shrimp tempura (the shrimps weren't fresh), tuna fillet tempura and wakame. The ramen was hand made from the ground up which is good. It also had perfectly cooked eggs for a standard Japanese ramen. The broth was above average delicious. Let's wrap it up. Venue was clean, cozy and well-airconditioned. The service crew were outstanding. The dessert was so, so. Finally, the seafood ramen was just average hovering near mediocre for a Japanese restaurant. The taste was delicious though. For the pricey offering and Japanese restaurant authenticity', I'm giving New Leaf 3 stars. Honestly, New Leaf is a Filipino-Japanese fusion restaurant; and NOT an authentic' Japanese restaurant."
