"Myself and my wife visited whilst in Borth. We went to the bar and whilst a man behind the bar said hello he otherwise ignored us and proceeded to serve a local who walked in after us. Another barman appeared and I asked him if they were serving food and from what time. He said he had no idea and suggested we went to another area of the pub to find out. I them ordered a pint of Butty Bach and the barman returned with a half pint. After that I gave up and took my business elsewhere on the basis I the locals take priority over strangers 2 staff have no knowledge of the business they are running and 3 staff do not listen to customers. So don't expect a nice welcome or good service at the Railway Inn in Borth, as you will be disappointed on both counts. In my humble opinion, the management of this pub need to have a bit of a rethink about their approach to first time customers. We left before we had the opportunity to try either their food or the real ale on offer, so cannot comment on either."

"Nice place but the service and the food was lacking. For transparency my wife and I were ‘comped’ a round of drinks because of the 1hr 20mins wait for service after ordering. The bar and grille was reasonably busy but was over its ‘peak’ when we arrived. Staff were really nice and we had a drink before ordering a meal. We did not receive our order for a further 80 mins ; had more drinks whilst waiting; listened to another couple going through the same experience; spoke to staff who comped us a drink apologising that there were only three staff and the manager was ‘covering from Stafford’, and then the food arrived. Very disappointing and ‘ping/ding’ food. Nothing like the website brief of ‘freshly and locally sourced produce’ or if it is the cooking was not mentioned. Overall cannot fault the on duty staff who were committed and embarrassed. But my wife and I, along with at least one couple celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary are disappointed."

"Last night of a family holiday. Staying in Brynowen (15 20 mins away) but wanted somewhere nice for our “last supper”! Settled on a Thai meal and TripAdvisor suggested this place. Last review indicated the Orchid had moved a couple of streets away so thankfully we went to Pier Street. Aberystwyth itself was dead. Friday night. Quite surprised but apparently the local university has finished for the summer, its only the beginning of peak holiday season and the weather today was shocking. But still expected the centre of the nearest decent sized town to be somewhat more bustling than dead! Orchid had only one other couple in when we arrived so no need to book. Shown to a table by a friendly waitress who remained so throughout. Had the mixed starter which was lovely. A variety of different starters meat, vegetarian and fish all delicious. Then I had the chicken Penang curry. Again, really really tasty and enjoyed it a lot. In fact my whole table really enjoyed their food and the chef came out at the end and was equally friendly. It’s a shame the chances of my girlfriend and I returning to this part of the world anytime soon are remote otherwise we’d include Orchid in our list of monthly eateries. Highly recommended. P.S. Pay in excess of £30 is accepted at this restaurant."

"Food full of flavour, good portion size, excellent wines, friendly efficient staff, a beautiful period building tastefully decorated with a light, modern elegance, interesting artwork and sculptures, very different from those normally seen in a restaurant. There are crisp linen tablecloths elegant silverware for the tables, gentle low background music, not stuffy mournful, we enjoyed listening to Leonard Cohen. We have dined in many fabulous hotels restaurants including the ‘Hand Picked’ and ‘Macdonalds’ groups. When we see ‘Fine dining’ we have come to expect very small portions but not so at Hammet House. I meant to order vegetables with my fillet steak meal but was glad I forgot – there was plenty of food variety on the plate, just right. Dessert did not disappoint either – attractive, light, full of flavour textures. A very talented chef! The ‘plastic’ chairs in the dining room are not plastic, they are expensive Designer pieces in clear polycarbonate (we checked them out with a view to buying some! and give an attractive light, modern look wonderful airy feel to the dining room. Also – if a designer ‘plastic’ chair is good enough for the Duke Duchess of Devonshire at the fabulous Chatsworth House in Derbyshire (we know as we are regulars there , then they are fine in any top restaurant! Our bill for 2 fillet steak dinners with 2 desserts wine was just under £100 which we feel was very good value. Lower cost options were available and we could have chosen alternatives for around £40 per couple for a 2 course each (plus wine if you want it MUCH better value than many run of the mill pub restaurants. The new owners are bringing fine dining into the 21st century and are doing a great job, I just wish we lived nearer as it would be our preferred dining venue. We will definitely be back when visiting Wales again soon. Thank you for a wonderful evening."

"Great service and nice eating. I decided for the fried chickenburger and friends had the halloumi burger. the burgers were very customizable and tasty and the beer garden is dog friendly with water for thirsty dogs. I did not try the steaks that looked really good, but for a quick bite with a few pints I can recommend the royal oak."
