As I was sitting in VN Wrap 'n Roll scarfing down a banh mi, some fried stuff and a can of cola for lunch, watching a crowd of Anglo tradies, truckies and big-boned shop clerk women stream in, it struck me: This is what the old Aussie tuck shop has become. Instead of fish and chips and fresh cut sandwiches, it 's exotically spiced pork and Vietnamese subs. Still fills the same need, for a quick feed and then back to work, but the flavours are much different now. And good on Australians for being flexible enough with their tastebuds to adapt to a new way of eating things. "My score 3.5 stars. J and I got takeaway for dinner from here on Fri 17th Jan. Service was nice, food was cheap and pretty good (points off for excess sweetness in filling). <br/ <br/ J got a tofu and salad Bahn Mi – Same salad as below. The tofu was a mix of fried tofu, carrots and bean shoots, all marinated together and then warmed on the hotplate (before adding to the roll) – they added heaps of it!!! Overall very tasty, a bit too sweet and a little too salty (from added soy sauce – skip next time). <br/ <br/ I got a paté and salad Bahn Mi – All the standard stuff including chillies and coriander, no peanuts but fried shallots included. Very nice – only criticism is that it was quite sweet (maybe the pickled carrot)?<br/ <br/ Interestingly they placed both rolls on the hot plate after filling them and this made them the most crisp one’s we’ve ever had when not eating them straight away!"
