City: Tijuana, Kilometer 38, Free Road, Rosarito 22706, Mexico, Tijuana
"Las Rocas, at kilometer 38, has been a Rosarito institution as a resort and spa for decades. It's spectacular views, gorgeous grounds, and lovely pools provide one of the best settings in the area. They now offer Sunday Brunch ($12.00 each), and it is, in my opinion, the best in the area. There are steam table trays filled with appetising Mexican choices, and there are various stations for typical American choices. The omlets are beautifully prepared, as are pancakes at the pancake station. (Pancakes and French Toast are also available at the steam tables, and they are never allowed to languish there--if patrons don't empty the steam tray, servers will; the pancakes and French Toast are always fresh, even in the steam tray.) There is a lovely fresh fruit selection, and yoghurt is available. Bacon and sausage are perfectly cooked--and the dessert table is overflowing with spectacular choices (they are different each week). There is outside seating with a gorgeous view, and there is inside seating with the same view. Friendly servers are always waiting to pour more coffee, get water, or take a plate out of your way. Every aspect of the area is clean and well maintained. If you want a lovely brunch experience, Las Rocas can provide it! Tell the guard at the well-secured parking lot you are going in to eat, and go down the gentle outdoor staircase to the left of the registration office to the lower level brunch area. You'll be smiling at the view before you get to the bottom of the stairs. (Happy hour under the palapa is pretty special, too.)"

"Its hard to find a Menudo or Pozole that is not really greasy, so it was such a nice surprise to find this small modest place in Playas de Tijuana. We tried both the Menudo and the Pozole and both where really, really good, well served, meat was soft and well cooked. And the cucumber fresh water was absolutely delicious."

"I've been coming here since the early days when my parents brought us to dinner while they bought fresh seafood next door. the tacos are amazing! served with a full piece of carne asada filet and a piece of avocado instead of guacamole, with every bite it feels like a mouthful, think about it makes my mouth water again. also the meat and tortilla are cooked over a grill with charcoal, which taste even more homemade. Do not forget to order their limonade, as it is also made fresh and does not taste too much as most places. the best, but strange for tacos lover is the mayonnaise, not skip, mayo takes it a couple of kerbe. nothing has changed to this place, except in the last time there are tables and chairs behind the grill that they are able to provide more people. my absolutely best recommended taco stop for visitors and locals alike, do not miss them."

"This restaurant is a must, totally have to visit it and will make you come back again and again to keep trying their signature dishes. Everything is made to order, always fresh. I recomend the salmon ceviche with mango slices or the clam showder, this...is a Fish restaurant, and if you do not like fish at all, believe me, you will love it. Well stocked artisanal craft beers, mojitos or tamarind martinis, and not to forget their signature tequila jarritos. If you are ever down south, this is a must restaurant."

City: Tijuana, Paseo Pedregal #2031 Secc. Dorado, Playas de Tijuana Tijuana, Tijuana, Mexico
"Playas de Tijuana is a mostly residential neighborhood in the extreme north-west corner of Tijuana; it's pushed right up against the fence that divides Mexico and the United States. A bit out of the main commercial part of it though is Laihoo's. When you drive into Playas, the main street is Paseo Ensenada. You follow it to the first traffic light which is Paseo Pedregal. You turn left and continue on passing the city government buildings, fire station and sports field. A couple of blocks beyond the sports field and just before you reach the Oxxo Laihoo's will be on your right. You can spot it thanks to the string of red Chinese paper lanterns hanging outside. One of this place's claims to fame (but by no means its only one) is the home-baked biscuits. These are served with a variety of fillings both savory and sweet. But many other delicious baked goods are available too. There is a tempting display right in the front window that's impossible to pass up. Looking in at it makes your mouth water with anticipation. The menu consists primarily of very fresh healthy things (like fruit smoothies, fresh fruit salads, etc.) and traditional Mexican diner food (enchiladas, sopes, Milanesa, etc.) Everything is fresh and well prepared and service is stellar. The place is tiny but charming and the staff is pleasant, caring and there to serve. They are delightful. When you first sit down they bring a plate with a selection of pastries. You consume what you want and leave the rest and are charged accordingly. I have to confess that it took all my will power to resist the pastries and concentrate on lunch. (I did buy a bag of pastries to take home, though, to be enjoyed later this evening.)I started with a chicken sope (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sope). The order normally comes with three of them but I wanted my main dish to be the Milanesa (breaded beef steak) so I asked if I could have just one sope to taste and they were more than willing to satisfy my request. The sope was delicious because the fried dough itself was just crispy enough where needed to be and soft and fluffy elsewhere. The chicken too was home-baked and hand-shredded. Very tasty. The Milanesa was super. Mega-thin steak, perfectly breaded and fried with spectacular fried potatoes, beans and green salad as sides. This is definitely a place worthy of repeat visits. I intend to return and bring friends with me. It's a hidden gem tucked into a residential section of a off-the-beaten-track residential neighborhood in Tijuana that's well worth a visit. If you are headed to Rosarito/Ensenada on the scenic highway, detour into Playas before you hit the highway and try out this place. You won't regret it."
