"So whilst I was chowing down on my delicious $9.90 ($10) steak special at the Mosman Hotel, my mate proceeded to inform me of another wonderful deal one can find in Mosman. A $15 burger, fries and schooner of beer (Fat Yak Pale Ale) at Mosman’s Burger Shed. A combo like that for $15 is usually a steal, especially when you consider most pubs will charge at least half of that if not more for a schooner of Fat Yak. Being a burger connoisseur, I was in and we agreed to meet up later that week to spend a worthy $15.

I went with the Smokey Bacon which comes with a waygu beef patty, streaky bacon, cheese, onion, tomato, lettuce, pickles and Smokey Shed sauce. My mate just went with the Vintage cheese which is a basically a cheeseburger. Both burgers are served up on soft milk buns. We both paired ours with a Schooner of Fat Yak (naturally, c’mon!) which were poured from the tap at the counter into fancy looking Fat Yak branded glasses.

The restaurant wasn’t overly busy for a Wednesday evening and our meals came out quickly. Appearance wise they looked pretty damn good. Not extravagant or anything that looks like it’s trying for a place in the Guinness World Records, but it looked solid and tasty. The fries came in little deep fryer baskets that I’ve noticed some restaurants are using as s trendy way to serve chips.

The chips were solid and on point. Hot, and crunchy whilst remaining soft and fluffy on the inside. I’ve noticed that French Fries no longer seem to be the norm at most places, and this pleases me a lot. French Fries are overrated in my opinion. Fine for McDonalds, but other than that they’re not needed in the culinary world.

The burger ended up being pretty tasty. The patty, which is kind of the centrepiece of the burger wasn’t as good as I was hoping to be. I’m pretty sure it wasn’t made in house and was pre-made by a machine (you can always tell just by the shaping of the patty). It was also slightly overcooked for my liking leaving it a little chewy. That aside, it was seasoned well and tasted OK. It did go well with the other ingredients in the burger. The smokey burger sauce was really nice and complemented the patty and bacon really well. The bacon was cooked nicely, but wasn’t crispy which is OK by me in a burger. The cheese had melted perfectly over the beef which is always a good sign, and the lettuce and tomato provided an excellent freshness which rounded out juices dribbling out courtesy of the oil from the beef and cheese, along with the burger sauce.

All in all, it was a nice burger, without being anything overly special. I’ve heard these guys have been poor in the past but apparently have been taken over and in recent months have been improving. The addition of the $15.00 burger special with a beer is a great concept and I’m sure it’s going to help bring many customers though the doors. So long as they keep the simple things right with their burgers I’m sure they’ll gain a good reputation of being a solid burger joint in Mosman and the Northern Beaches/North Shore. I’m sure I’ll be back. They’ve some other burgers that look pretty decent, and you can’t go wrong with a schooner of beer with a burger!"

"Never a good idea to challenge fate. We had been Mosman Rowers for breakfast previously and, although the service then was execrable, the food was very good - so we entered with the rationale ‘how bad can it be?’.

Oh dear. The service was as we remembered it (although after a certain amount of elapsed time the concept of ‘service’ ceases to be relevant). The food was not as we remembered it. My brioche French toast was clearly supermarket-industrial-white French toast. My wife’s zucchini and corn fritter was, in fact, a zucchini-free zone (presumably it had eloped with the brioche) and one cannot but sympathise with the chef who, not unreasonably, had assumed from the external charring that the middle was cooked.

We could at least complain (we did) and withhold a tip but the waitress – presumably anticipating our reaction from those of previous customers - extracted her own by short-changing me.

Only the fact the coffee was ‘all right’ kept them from a perfect score. Avoid."

"Delicious chicken wings and veggies. Not really value for money but they make up with it in flavour. Keen to try the chicken schnitzel next time."
