"If it were possible to give a negative rating I would. We were a party of seven friends and family celebrating a birthday and successful Baccalaureate achievement one Sunday evening. The Croq Magnon, nestled as it is, in the Town Square overlooked by the statue of Cyrano de Bergerac (slightly ironically as he wasn 't from Bergerac, but hey tourism) and bounded by cheerfully playing fountains, seemed the ideal place to have a relaxed evening meal. Things started well with various members of the party choosing from both the fixed and a la carte menus. Drinks were promptly provided and starter courses, some of the salads of epic proportions, were delivered. Then events began to take a less than optimal course. Firstly, several of us had ordered Steak Frites, and we had been closely questioned as to our steak cooking preferences. However, when these arrived a great deal of confusion reigned as the owner (as we later discovered was his role) slapped several plates on the table, all of which appeared well done. No amount of discussion revealed that there was any possible way of differentiation between them short of actually eating them. Further, all the steaks were tough, chewy and tasted only of basting. The chips were, however, quite edible! Not all of the guests were as lucky. Several of our party had to wait quite a while into our demolishing of steak before their main courses arrived. Part way through we felt the need to dull our disappointment with the food so far by asking for further beverages, only to be told that there was no longer any beer other than a rather expensive one that we were directed to try. It seemed rather strange that a restaurant runs out of beer. Perhaps it 's just me? Some of us had, as I remarked earlier, chosen from the fixed menu which offered the chocolatey delight of a crépe. Bizarrely, even though we were encouraged to make this choice at the beginning of the meal, we were surlily informed that no crépes were to be had. When we had the temerity to point out that we were unhappy with this situation the waitress and the owner muttered under their breath and sloped off to prepare them. They arrived without the advertised ice cream and chantilly. Finishing up we asked for the bill, which after a long wait (while the owner dealt with a long line of customers querying THEIR bills) we were presented with a bill which after two grumpy debates necessitated by being overcharged, we agreed to pay. Our parting gift, as relayed by our French speaking friends, was the knowledge that the owner had described our party as the most annoying bunch of sh##s he 'd ever experienced . DO NOT EVER GO THERE!"

"We know Bergerac pretty much inside out, and have often enjoyed a drink outside the Riche. The thing is, you can always get a table, and will very often be the only people there. The façade tells a story of faded glory, and the interior is from another world, a seventies renovation of a grand belle epoque saloon. The owner is affable, approachable, always impeccably presented in traditional service attire, and the waiter is helpful, friendly getting on a bit, with a commitment to service to match. The low-key, rather fusty image seems to discourage people looking for a good lunch, but the reticence is massively misplaced. It's a fabulous find! Last week We ate here for the first time; The menu is small, hyper-traditional and appears to be good value. However, when the food arrives, it's a genuine almighty surprise, almost gourmet in presentation and absolutely delicious! Duck breast or leg, entrecote, toulouse sausages or salad, presented to perfection. Desserts are crême brulée or cheeses, all excellent. France is losing all its traditional gems like this, being replaced by ghastly poke bars and super-expensive vegetarian flannel where you get right-on politics served with your spiralised quinoa. Give all that a miss, have a lovely steak frites and a jug of wine at Café le Riche, Bergerac's best kept secret!"

"Went there alone for dinner. Quiet area, quite pricey but overall food is prepared in front of you by the chef and his team. Service is good, quick and smily. Foie gras, Spanish pork and strawberries were ok with good Bergerac rosé wine. Worth trying it."

"I decided to take a walk out of the busy streets and past all the usual selection of french restaurants. Heading towards the river I broke left and over the stone and brick clad bridge, the one at the bottom of the hill - close by the river ferry. Walking on I passed a small quite square with one or two small cafe/bar types. It was around midday so not much was happening at this time and the sun was pressing down. I walked passed this small restaurant with some interesting looking photos in the window. Before I have lived in south east asia and love eating local food there especially Indonesian, I thought I spotted something looking to my fancy and walked around the corner before plucking up the courage to head inside. As my french language is rather limited I stuttered a few words and gestured towards the pictures like any good pro tourist does. Bea was helpful in helping me pick something and actually I just went for the same thing in the photo which I found out to be delicious side of fried banana, some side serving of rice with small chopped veggies and I'm not sure how to describe though i will try, it reminded me indian saag curry in colour though with more texture and consistency, was made up of some chopped dark green vegetable and I discovered there was also flaked pieces of white fish and shrimp inside. Lastly, although served firstly, was a small mustard looking dish with a slightly oily texture described as La Pric, now I'm guessing that is chilli in french as it was a little fiery! Once I tucked in I discovered the chilli sauce went great with the fried banana bringing out some deep flavours and the rice just as well with the dark green veggie dish making for a tasty meal. The portion size was generous and overall my bill came to about 14 euro including non-alcoholic drinks.Overall I was happy to spend some time in this quite corner and watch the people passing by while having a chat with the owner about some local events she organises as well as life in Bergerac."
