"I would give this cafe a four but just cannot go more than a two due to the awful staff. We wandered in at 9pm just to have some dessert and coffee. I asked the waiter if we could have dolce (dessert) and cappuccino. He...hemmed and said he’d have to ask someone—don’t know who or why but okay, since we had no reservation, that was fine. He comes back out and says we can stay but only at the tables outside. It was a might cool but we agreed. Then we waited and waited and waited for him to take our order. Now, we’d been in Italy for over a week and were used to the slower pace of restaurants here, but this was an unusually long wait and the waiter seemed to be actively ignoring us. At this point I knew we should have just got up and left but we’re Canadian and just too damned polite. When he finally took our order, I tried my best to do so in Italian. I believe it’s respectful to at least try to use a few words in the language of the country you are visiting. When I got to the part where I ordered a few macarons, he paused with a smirk and said “that’s not Italian, that’s French”. I’m not sure if he was making fun of my attempts at speaking Italian or the fact that I would order a French dessert while in Italy, but I could tell he was definitely being derisive. At that point, once again I felt like leaving but was too polite to do so. The desserts arrived and without thinking, I said thank you in French—I speak both French and English. The waiter fairly sneered “grat-see-aye” (grazie) at me like he was correcting an errant two year old. I wanted to toss my cappuccino at him. The cakes were excellent but I couldn’t enjoy them or the lovely scenery of the surrounding square because I was so furious. To add more insult to injury, we waited so long for the bill that we finally had to get up and go inside to pay. The young lady who took my credit card was just as rude and snooty as the waiter had been. And the worst part? We paid thirty euros (approximately forty-five Canadian dollars) for this rotten experience! We have been to many cafes and restaurants in our ten days here in Italy so far and we have never been treated so poorly. Nota Bene: Every other place we have been to was off the beaten track, so my advice to you all is to stay as far away as possible from the restaurants near popular tourist sites. We should have known that from the start but were too tired to walk far from the hotel. Next time we walk."
