"Tried El Rey for the first time! So exciting and delicious. Hole in the wall. Server was suuper friendly and helpful. I ordered the vegetarian arepa with sweet plaintains- my favorite thing we ate! I also split fried yuca with onions and the pork 'k-rod '."

"The male half of IllyCoffeeDrinkers (an open minded but loyal Lafayette Coney Island fan) and a college buddy went here for lunch on a November Thursday. First the upsides, American Coney Island has a very loyal following as does Lafayette next door, American’s menu has a little more variety, their Coney Islands are loaded and the chili is mild (photo attached), they have more tables and windows than Lafayette, and since American is located on a triangular corner in Downtown Detroit, it is a nice spot for people watching. Now the downsides, numerous tables were not cleared quickly, after we were seated the service was next to non-existent, one of us had to flag down our waiter to order another Coney, no drink refills were ever offered, and the fries were so-so and under cooked. We are well aware of the rivalry and hoped American would live up to its reputation, it did not. Bottom line, Lafayette is better. "I came in starving hoping for quick service. I was quickly seated with my family given menus and drinks by a waitress named Riane. She made sure our dinner was the best one we'd ever have. On top that, she kept checking on us making sure the food was made perfectly. Nothing but good service all round. Definitely coming back."

"The restaurant was really nice and clean. The service was good too and the food. Our waitress was really nice and polite, food came nice and hot and was really good. I had some beer and that was good also. The bill wasn't too bad either for 10 people. I would recommend it to anyone who loves Mexican food."
