"My family and I were driving back from Yverdon to Bern and stopped for lunch in the impressive Medieval town of Avenches. After a short wander around the old town (ghost-town-quiet on a Sunday,) we happened upon Restaurant des Arcades with its lovely outdoor patio looking down onto the main street. (I did a quick check of the interior and it looked fine but not quite as charming.) After a tasty amuse-bouche of pickled anchovies on toast and a couple of simple green salads (good dressing,) we eventually settled into superbly cooked fish dishes: the kids and husband had small portions of the famous Swiss lake fish egli (perch in English, perche in French) served with an outstanding mixed-herb butter sauce. The kids had starter portions served with boiled potatoes, husband had same but also with a few greens and some match-stick fries ("frites allumettes.") I had the mackerel tartare which was very much like cerviche, also served with the match-stick fries as well as toast. Oh, we drank a very fine local beer (bottle) from Oleyres - some four kilometers from Avenches. Feeling very good about the extremely well-prepared, delicately served fish dishes, we went onto desserts. Again, it was three to one: I had a mouth-watering little custard tartlette with read berries. Again beautifully presented. The others stuck with various ice-creams (all made locally.) The service was impeccable - the kind of professional service one gets used to here: friendly but not unctuous. A charming male waiter and an equally lovely females waiter. With water and a coffee, it all rounded off to just under CHF200 - Swiss pricey but really a superb Sunday lunch in a fantastic setting."

"I came to the terrace and wanting to have a rib of beef ... the waitress kindly explains to me that there is none in the kitchen! In fact, the boss, seated as usual on the round table next to the cash register, is drinking glass on glass...I learned about it from my neighbors at the table! I heard him vociferate at one of the waitresses... It's unfortunate but... Maybe one day he will understand..."

"We had lunch on a sunday on the nice and lake overlooking terrasse. Waitresses were nice and professional and advised us well on the choice of wine. While waiting for the dishes we ordered we had our apéritiv, however expensive (1 dl of tap water for a campari comes at an additional 2.50 CHF) we were not offered any nuts, or olives and no bread was offered either. The meals were of average quality. The baked potato was much too small but was swimming in sour cream. The steak was of good quality and the vegetables fresh. My wifes souvlaki with pork meat was rather chewy and chickpeas didn't really fit well with a greek dish. Overall nice lunch thanks to the friendly service and nice location but clearly overpriced for the kind of restaurant."

"On short notice we contacted the owners for a special celebration lunch with food that would remind us of our great motorcycle trip a year ago. What we got was breathtaking. As a starter a risotto with crab meat and vegetables served in a deep...black dish perfectly cooked and wonderfully presented. The main dish was wild salmon on asparagus and spring onions with fresh Canadian mushroom and blue mashed potatoes with a foamy lightly buttered sauce (see picture). Best salmon I ever had. The dishes were accompanied by tasty local wines from the vineyards right below the village. Sunshine, view of lake Murten and the Swiss Alps and great food, this is the place where you can get it all."
