"If you are searching for a memorable experience and are passing through the eastern-most area of the region of Molise, I recommend a detour to the hilltop town of Montelongo. You would be remiss not to visit Trattoria Nostrana for a hyper-regional Italian dining adventure. Chef/proprietor Maria Concetta Pannunzio delivers homemade cuisine with personalized service that can best be described as eating in the home of your favorite Italian aunt. We tried nearly every antipasti on the menu, but the highlights for us included the homemade salumi, formaggi, and marmelades. The flavor of the artisanal products cannot be replicated by commercial products more often found in restaurants. For primi, we opted for the troccoli (think fat spaghetti) con ragu di noglie, which was an adventure in 5/4 eating, and troccoli con la mollica, which is a tomato, baccala, and breadcrumb sauce. Both were amongst the most unique pasta dishes I have ever eaten, but certainly not for the faint of heart. For secondi, we had agnello alla birra and miscisca, which are lamb slow cooked in beer and a chili and spice-laden mutton, respectively. All in all an experience not to be missed for foodies or those who want an authentic homemade meal cooked by a very sweet lady."
