"I came here for my annual visit when I stop on the way to the UK from Portugal (it's just over half way....)I am always happy with Le Chai. Given putative gastronomic standards in France, this place probably wouldn't even get a basic entry in the Michelin guide. But this is a high quality place with a talented chef. You will rub shoulders with locals having a meal - or sitting at the bar for snacks and a drink - or tourists on the the cognac trail. The set menu is uninteresting but the a la carte has some excellent dishes - albeit at €16 a throw for starters and €25 to €30 for mains. I had a superb monkfish dish ('lotte' in French) with endive, celeriac, courgette, tomato and aubergine, fried in butter ( of course). Some really excellent ideas on the plate.And the wine list is superb - and not bad value too - it is particularly good for the Loire valley (e.g. Chinon, Sancerre) but it has £400 per bottle claret if you want that too. The maitre d' resides over everything and generates the banter with the locals and co-ordinates the wines while the young waitresses do all the work but the place is a great experience.I can highly recommend it - in the last 10 years, I have experienced a lot of complacency and laziness in French cuisine but this place bucks the trend."

"This was the second year running in having our anniversary lunch in Cognac. Lovely setting on the terrace overlooking the Charente and Food to match. Plat du jour was beautiful fillet de Porc mignon with pasta and veg whilst others had wonderful Pizza. Children's menu was proper food rather than processed stuff. Great lunch - both service and food. Would love to revisit next year! Many thanks to everyone at La Scala!"

"Avoid at all costs! Miserable owner, it was a special occasion and we chose this restaurant to celebrate. We wondered why it was mostly British and after the meal we realised why, the French know good food!!! When finally a French couple did arrive they were shown a specials board which non of us were. If you own a restaurant and want to make money, make your guests welcome!!! The food was appalling, Thai chicken was a cold chicken breast with a trickle of ghastly sauce. Steak was cold and chipped potatoes black! Avoid"

"Beautiful space, lovely tables and a discreet and upmarket atmosphere. Very professional staff, but see below. Very good food, excellently presented with one or two memorable dishes. Good for a special occasion. The wine list mark up is absurd for some wines, and the pairing costs food/wine likewise. We also had a waiter who, when we told him we would eat a la carte, told us what HE would order in that case. Sorry I'm not interested in his preferences."

"Lots of local customers all looking happy and NOT eating pizza. We ordered 3 pizza's all very very dry. Really bad pizza, if you go, try something else. Oh and by the way, clean your high chair properly please. Italians love children."
