"The problem from dish to dish was old or just really off-tasting oil. Whether deep-fried or stir-fried, everything was just off as a result. I hope it was just a bad day, but one starts to think they are trying to cut corners in the wrong places. Especially awful on appetizers (two, both deep-fried) – otherwise pretty decent light spring rolls (oil temp must have been right, so good there, inside ingredients fine) the crab rangoon thingies that are purely American (once again, properly fried, but in rancid or otherwise bad oil). Sauces were fine, preferable really to putting something fancy on these things: the mustard sauce that’s just mustard powder water, standard bright pink sweet sour sauce probably thickened with corn starch or tartar powder. Chinese? Hardly. But that’s ok. But the fried things themselves just weren’t good. Insides were fine, cooking was fine, but the oil was awful. How much money can you possibly save by not changing the cooking oil?? Aside from the terrible oil problem, which spoiled every dish, nothing fundamentally incompetent, but I don’t think the owners would eat it themselves if they tasted it. I’m not sure what’s wrong. Examples of things that were right: broccoli in the broccoli beef dish, not overcooked, despite it being a catering job, delivered across town. Beef sort of survived by being over-tenderized, And, as noted, competent fry-cooking. But the oil spoiled everything, and they use a lot of it. I’m actually ok with excess oil, just not excess oil that really smells and tastes bad. And why was the ratio of water chestnuts to chicken bits in one dish essentially 1:1? Budget, I presume . . . Hey, the pharma rep didn’t notice (well, at some point he probably noticed we weren’t really eating, just trying to be polite). Luckily for him, most of us don’t remember what he was selling, and most of those who do and prescribe probably won’t be influenced anyway. But, unusually, we remembered that the food was bad and had the restaurant’s name on it. Unfortunately for the restaurant, we did take note of where not to go. It is rare that a restaurant gets a reaction more dire than some of us liked it, some of us didn’t. Sadly, we ate the fried appetizers anyway. I know I just kept hoping they’d get better, that my first taste had been wrong, but they didn’t. (I was going back for what was right about them, whicih was everything but the oil). Those 1947 sauces can save almost anything; ultimately I just wanted fried wrappers, mustard, sweet sour, decent innards, and it almost worked if you put enough sauce on them. But it never quite did, the main dishes, after a few untouched days, ended up in the trash. Standard for pharma lunches, for the most part, but in this case much more so, and an unusual level of “that was just awful” talk after."

"The first time here. My friend and I wandered in search of another sushi place than what we always go. We were both so pleasantly surprised and furnished by the atmosphere as soon as we came in. We came specifically for sushi, so we had a role and it was wonderful! But I was so fascinated with her Korean bbq that we also ordered some of them. And it was also wonderful! We will definitely come back! What a big jewel of a restaurant in downtown! We have a new favorite sushi place!!"
