"Lunch after exploring the long beach at Mira. Caçanito was the last little restaurant on the beach side of the street. Many others were already closed at the end of the season. The waiter was helpful and welcoming, if a little overburdened on his own with a half-filled property. But we were in no hurry. We selected sardines from the chilled display, since they looked so fresh, and we had found only frozen sardines further south. We had Ameijoas to start (a single serving of the shellfish) and a bottle of the house Vinho Branco, which was from nearby Cantanhede, and a perfect match to the food. The grilled sardines, all 12 of them, were served on a large platter with a salad accompaniment. They had been lightly salted before grilling, and the crunch of sea salt on the skin added to the flavour well. About half the fish contained roe, and all were done to perfection. With no room for a dessert from the meagre commercial ice-cream offerings, a café corto topped off the meal admirably. Unpretentious, friendly and good value for money."
