"I've been eating at Silver's since I was 18 years old and a student at Southampton College (which itself may soon go the way of the do-do). I'm now 49. When I went there, Garrett's grandfather ran the ship. It looked so different. Gone are the cigars and the magazine racks in the entranceway. My friends took a trip there specifically for its clam chowder, which emanated the scent and flavor of tarragon, an herb to which I grew fond of at an early age, never mind the clams in the shell, even if there were a few errant sand grains. It was phantasmagorical orgasmic student nirvana. We saved our little pennies from working as waitresses at Driver's Seat around the corner or Lobster Inn, nearly just opened, to indulge at Silver's with its flavored sodas, salads, soups and beautiful-people atmosphere. I remember they used to hang something on the wall noting the famous people who had dined there. I guess gone are the days when Truman Capote or Woody Allen would stroll in, but I still giving Silver's an 11 on a scale of 1-10. What particularly thrills me is when Chef Garrett, and grandson of the original, brings the lobster bisque to my table himself. I dine alone these days. But somehow, when he asks how I am, I think he remembers me from the old days. Could that be possible?"
