"This is a hard restaurant to write about. It is a 'hole in the wall' small place that is NOT in the center of the city of Merida nor is it in an 'up-scale' area. it is on the street out of centro that is called Av. Jacinto Canek (it is really where 57 becomes 59 leaving the city).We drove by and were going to the fish market next door, however, they were closed so we decided to try this 'kind of new' little seafood restaurant. It has more pros than cons. The biggest thing was that the fried fish was not greasy. It was just as advertised - crispy! We had three different kind of tacos - fried fish, fried shrimp and shrimp in vinegar. They were OK - not really anything special other than they were not like most friend seafood in Merida - dripping in grease. That was a very big pro! The friend 'crispy' shrimp had a very strong taste that we could not identify so we asked the owner (he is also the chef) and he said there was no strange ingredient and he was no help on the identification. He did tell us that it might be the oil because it was a combination of things that included cardamon. It might have been this but I use cardamon in cooking Indian food and it does not have this strong, almost chemical taste. We also ordered the fries fish plate and again, it was crispy and NOT oily. So, another pro! The other major pro was the price. I could not believe the amount of food we got for such a VERY small price! So what is the con side of this little interesting restaurant? There was just not much flavor. They lacked any interest. They did not taste bad but they lacked anteing taste of interest. A lack of salt may have been the problem.We liked the quality of service and enjoyed talking with the owner/chef. Will we return? I do not think we will be back in the near future. After we give it some time we might return to see if the quality of taste matches the quality of service!"

"Two weeks ago I tried this 'new' restaurant and was so impressed I had to rush home and write a review. Because of my second visit I have had that review removed. I am so sad to report that on my second visit the quality was not even close to the original meal.The chips I loved so much the fist time were so oily they could not even be eaten. Worse than the poor quality was the zero reaction I received from the server. The service was VERY slow this time [there were only 3 tables of clients so it was not busy] and the food arrived piece-meal. I was served first and then a few minutes our guest was served, then when we were almost finished my wife was served. My fried calamari arrived cold and was very greasy. Our guest questioned if it was in fact calamari and not a substitute because of the shape and texture [every one of the pieces was equal and perfectly rounded - unlike fresh cut calamari]. I have never seen calamari so perfect and uniform in shape. Our guest ordered a salad with smoked tuna. It arrived drenched in salad dressing and with the tuna finely chopped on top. My shrimp tacos arrived cold and the batter on the shrimp was greasy like everything else we ordered. My wife ordered the pasta with shrimp and asked for 'very little cream'. It arrive with almost NO cream (that was a positive thing) and the shrimp were tasteless. The make of a good restaurant is consistency of quality and if El Santo Pez can not solve their problems [Old grease? Grease that is not hot enough when cooking? Slow service?] then they will not last long. On my first visit I was so impressed I just had to 'tell the world', well, on my second visit I was equally impressed - with how bad it was! We have so few really quality seafood restaurants in Merida I was wanting this to be a quality that apparently, is out of their reach. It pains me to say this but I will NOT return and I recommend that you do not waste your money on El Santo Pez. Service needs to improve (with 3 tables it should not take so long to get a glass of water after asking twice!) and quality of food needs to be better and 'fresher' tasting. Served hot would be a good start and with less grease would also help. I know, it is fried food, but there are many places in this city where you can eat fried food and you do not have to 'ring out the oil' before you try to eat it!!!! Why the loud rock music from the 70's, 80's etc.? This is another area that does not seem to fit into the theme of the restaurant. Big TVs do not add anything to the eating experience."

"Fuimos de paseo a Progreso y al llegar al malecón vimos este lugar. Por fuera parecía bueno, pero en realidad no lo es. De entrada los precios son carísimos!! Un Ceviche de mariscos que en otros lados puede estar en los $90.00 aquí estaba en $150.00. Las bebidas fueron aún mas agresivas. Fuera coca, limonada o agua, todo estaba casi en los $50.00.Pedí unos panuchos, y mi esposa un coctel de camarón. Le sirvieron a ella primero. Creo que terminó de comer y aun mis panuchos no llegaban. Le pregunté al mesero si lo habían olvidado, pero me dijo que no, que estaban batallando con el aceite o algo así. Como a los minutos me lo trajo, pero incluso el sabor era desagradable. Algo se sentía descompuesto, y preferí no comerlo. El mesero estuvo mas interesado todo el tiempo en vendernos cosas que en atendernos. Al final fui al baño para sonarme la nariz, y el olor que desprendía era como de baño de central de autobuses, sin ventilación y con todos los aromas concentrados. Creo que este restaurant se aprovecha de la ubicación donde se encuentra, no vale la pena ir ahí."
