"L'Epicurien was recommended to us in a guide book, so we went ahead one lunchtime and tried it. We were the only tourists in the place. Lunchtime attracts a lot of workers, both manual and other staff. My husband wasn't too sure about this arrangement, but it made it more authentic for me. The proprietor had only a little English and we have only a little Fench also! She told us what was on the menu that day, no choice it seemed. I quickly got out the phrase book for her to show whilst in the meantime she brought the chef and the meat itself out of the kitchen to show me. It was veal on the menu that day once she had found it in my guidebook. OMG, it was so tender and truly melt in the mouth delicious. Before this a traditional clear soup was brought out which had been offered 'froid ou chaud', cold or hot! Then we helped ourselves to the salad bar that had couscous, salad items, potato salad, pate, hams, cheese, and more! We had also been given bread with the soup and more bread was brought with the main also. We were given water and we also ordered a 75ml carafe of rose wine. Then came a choice of about 8 desserts. I had the chocolate and banana tiramisu and my hubbie had a Charlotte, sponge with raspberries. The puds were quite ordinary. The meal was washed down with a cup of coffee. The whole meal for the 2 of us only came to 30 euros!!!! £21 for the 2 of us!!! Amazing value! The staff were very efficient. Try it out when you are in the town of Thiviers - they only open lunchtimes though!"
