City: Roma, Piazza Filippo Il Macedone, 125-133 Centro Commerciale Le Terrazze, 00124 Italia, Roma, Italy
"Caffe Elite, Casal Palocca, Rome We found the last free table at the end of the seating area outside the café and next to the three auto ride machines for children – motorbike, horse and spaceship. We were opposite the farmacia. A couple were firmly holding their 3 year old and diligently feeding coins into the horse to keep it rocking. Hmm. Elsewhere in Le Terrazze – with its original minimalist designs from the 1960s – the occasional clandistino was working the people out shopping and hoping to make a euro or two from their supermarket trollies. Mid morning; the electronic board outside the farmacia showed 33degC and the café was more than half full – if you had been browsing the shops, at the local supermarket or simply out enjoying a start to the weekend, it was the obvious place to take your coffee brioche. There are other coffee places in Le Terrazze, but it was the Elite that was clearly numero uno. Tables of women were leaning into each other and talking; the men were more solitary and tended towards newspapers – deftly handing cigarettes and coffee – and then there were the boisterous young families – mum/dad and couple of kids. There must have been 50 of us seated, and another dozen or more inside – enjoying the air conditioning. The counter is in front of you as you enter, with separate reception immediately to the left. Order, pay and take your receipt to the bar and give your order to the woman managing the counter. She shouts the order to the pair of bariste working the coffee machines behind her. The choice of cornetti on the trays had already diminished, and we selected marmellata for the first and current filling for the second and, balancing cups and plates against the flow of people, went outside to find a place to sit. The cappuccino and café latte were good – as requested – hot/bolente, strong coffee flavour and with milk foam that remained in the cup – to be scrapped clean with the spoon as a final taste before leaving the table; a pleasant 20 minutes or so watching the world go by. The Elite is well named – quality cakes, gifts and space. We’ve been coming to Le Terrazze for more years than we care to remember; supermarkets, bars and banks have come and gone, but the prestigious café opposite the farmacia has remained a constant for the middle income families living in the garden suburb of Casal Palocca. This, of course, is reflected in the price that we paid that morning €5.30 (i.e. 30% more than our ‘local’ bar). It’s this thing about style, dress, image and being seen. Where you chose to drink your morning coffee counts. Peter Steele 19 August 2017"

City: Roma, Piazza S. L. Da Porto Maurizio, 18, Roma, Italy, 00125
"Gran Caffe Laura, Piazza San Leonardo da Porto Maurizio 18, 00125 Acilia. Take the suburban train out of the city centre and you hark back to those original communities in their original piccole citta e quartieri – you shift out of the modern/trendy/tourist Rome that everyone recognizes from those world famous images that glamorize and promote 2,000 years of regional history. Every year there are >60M visitors to the country bringing estimated value €190B – imagine … all those cappuccini, broiche and pizze. The attraction of the Gran Caffe Laura in Acilia, however, is that it’s part of the parallel society that has little or nothing to do with the tourist veneer that the stranieri have come to see/explore. Piazza San Leonardo da Porte Maurizio is to one side of the Via di Acilia where you’ll find Laura’s place – it’s the haunt of regulars. Look around at the social coffee people (when you’re there – they represent mainly the mature end of local society. These are friends and neighbours who go back … well, forever; people who have grown up in the neighbourhood, went to school together and who tend to know just about everyone. Acilia? Originally a small independent community that changed forever once malaria was eradicated 100 years ago and following the construction of the Via del Mare and the train line to Ostia Lido in the 1920s. Today there are >70,000 people living there. Change has been rapid in recent years with extensive new housing development low rise blocks of apartments along the train line; across the Via del Mare areas of newer town houses; and there never used to be a Casal Bernocchi quartieri next door. For all that, post WW2 construction has provided relatively stable populations adjacent to the commercial strip along the Via di Acilia. You’ll meet some of these people in Laura’s bar. And, that in itself is one good reason for getting off the train one afternoon – perhaps on your way back from Ostia Antica and wandering around the non historical/old fashion centre where Laura’s place can be found. Like most of the other people that Thursday morning, this was a meet up with a friend from Vitinia (two stations along the train line closer to Rome . Of course, we’d both come by car – separate cars to add to the creaking infrastructure that represents parking around the Piazza S. Leonardo da P. Maurizio There’s a small park at centre (in front of the church from which the Piazza is named – it’s the haunt of mature groups seated on benches park and people equally crowded out by those lines of parked cars. Many people double park too – to rush to the shops, to take coffee, to meet friends and/or simply to live life. Laura’s bar stretches along one side of the piazza – it’s a large bar with perhaps seating for 40 outside under cover, and dozen or more inside. The place is always busy sufficient to keep 4 5 bariste at work behind the main L shaped counter. Service is friendly to a fault – people willing and helpful to find exactly the cornetto that you want with your coffee, and others to take home; checking that your coffee is exactly the temperature you requested. (You have to request ‘bollente’ and/or ‘molto caldo’ otherwise you’ll get local – lukewarm – temperatures. Ours was expected to be a rushed meeting too … the friend was pushed for time. He drank his ‘caffe al ginseng’ (nutty flavoured expresso – energy booster at the bar, whilst the cappuccino was being prepared and someone was chasing up the brioche. Then we had little more than 10 minutes over coffee/brioche seated outside before we had to go; sharing a selfie or two before someone approached and offered to take a couple of normal photos and the newcomer got talking about the pleasure of meeting stranieire at Laura’s place, inquiring about us, etc. We waited (together with another driver for the owner of the double parked car blocking ours to return back … another 10 minutes (he arrived with a feeble smile and shrug before we could get away. Many years ago, we used to live in Acilia – across the Via del Mare towards the Tevere – and Acilia provided the local shopping centre, access to the Comune, a place in which to meet the school bus with the kids. We’d not been coffee/bar people in those days – no time that came later. But Laura’s has always been an occasional distant bar/cafe and, if we’ve been there couple times/year in recent times, it would be a fair guess. Acilia is where you find a selection of main shops – clothing, electronics, white goods, videos/DVDs, cell phones agencies, etc. so there was always a reason to be there. Coffee brioche cost €4.60 (brioche €0.80/each; cappuccino €1.00 caffe/ginseng €1.20 . Good value and pleasant surroundings in this old style traditional bar of the kind that is rapidly disappearing together with the people who frequent them. Couple of tables away, fortunately, there was a mature man that morning sitting by himself in a cloud of smoke puffing his way through a cigar. Old fashion suburban Italy. What’s not to like about the place. Peter Steele Infernetto 30 September 2019"
Gran Caffe Laura from Roma is a good option for a bar if you want to have a drink after work and sit with friends or alone, Also, the drinks menu at this place is exceptional and offers a significant and varied assortment of both local and international beers, which are definitely worth a try. If you decide to come for breakfast, you are offered a hearty brunch, For a snack, you can also have the yummy sandwiches, healthy salads and other snacks.
