"This is how it went: Advised to go here for fresh fish... Arrived Mid May 2 other Diners were here.. (Noticed it 's tacky decor) Waitress offered us wine we ordered white table wine.. Waitress asked what we 'd like to eat and it turned out none of the food was available apart from the starters and two pasta dishes. The pasta dishes were squares of swordfish and triangles of grouper fish .. We asked if they were fresh and the waitres said yes... We double checked with her in English and Italian to be sure we were on the same page... So we ordered those and a starter of grilled vegetables.. The vegetables arrived.. They were clearly pickled from a jar, tough and fridge cold, they also tasted off, the vinegar giving way to a rank aftertaste that was like wine that had sat around in the sun for a few days... So it was with little surprise that the 'fresh pasta ' arrived 10 minutes after we ordered it, clearly not fresh, freshly boiled perhaps but we saw the same food in the supermarket 's freezer department. It was over fishy and you couldn 't identify what you were eating, just mashed white fish. The tomatoes they scattered on top were however nice but you wouldn 't pay 12 euro 's for two diced tomatoes.. Anyway, we ate it deciding that it wouldn 't kill us and we 'd leave immediately after paying. Not in the habit of complaining as clearly they were running the place on a skeleton crew just trying not to go under in the not quite high season on this tiny beautiful island. Then the waitress remembered she hadn 't brought us our wine and exclaimed she was sorry, we said it doesn 't matter don 't worry about it, she said she 'd fetch it now, and we said please don 't worry, we would just like the bill please. She then said OK I won 't charge you for the wine then as though this was a great favor!! Anyway, we were glad to see the back of the place. Maybe it operates properly in high season, though Mid May isn 't far off so who knows... It turned out the restaurant immediately next door was a fantastic family run place with fresh food every day and wonderful wine and service. It was also a lot cheaper and the dishes enormous..."

"Lovely tuna salad with bread. Gorgeous setting looking out at the sea. The paninis looked huge and the food was reasonably priced compared to other places. Only downside really was that there was no toilet. (Also no milk for a white coffee)."

"Normally I wait a day to post a review and do it in Italian but my experience was so terrible that I had to do it upon leaving and in English to make sure I fully convey our experience. We came here two mornings in a row since we enjoyed our breakfast so much. At breakfast this morning we asked if we could leave our suitcases as we had an afternoon ferry. We made a reservation to return for lunch at 13:30. We arrived on time and see there’s a table of 14 people. We were told it may take some time for our food because the other table was before us. We understood and we ordered a cocktail while we waited. At 14:30 we received the menu. We take it even though we knew what we wanted to order as we were advised by the retired teacher at the table next to us. Well, the waiter never came back to take our order. We flag him down at 14:55 (yes 1+ hour later to place our order. He says the kitchen is closed. Incredible! When we approach the owner with our problem her response was “why are you ordering lunch at 15:00?” Completely unprofessional and argumentative. She made no attempt to understand what had happened or any attempt to resolve the issue. Thankfully the chef was there and offered to reopen the kitchen for us. (Even the retired teacher pleaded on our behalf only to be yelled at by the owner . The owner never came by our table to apologize or make amends. In fact, we ate lunch listening to her argue loudly with a vendor. When it came time to pay the bill she reluctantly gave a discount (5 euros! after we asked for it. We need to give credit to our waiter Alex who took responsibility for the situation. Also the chef who quickly responded to the situation (and is a very good chef . The owner on the other hand needs training in customer service as she made the situation worse. I hate to think she treated us as tourists. We’re Americans who live in Sicily and go to Salina often, frequenting the same B&B and the same restaurants. We will NOT be recommending this place to our friends. "24/6 We had lunch today in this well known establishment. I was with people very important to me and I was hoping for a really nice experience. Mamma Santina delivered it and more! In Salina most of the restaurant have abandoned the typical cuisine for a more daring (and expensive) approach, offering places that would pretend to be glamorous but most of the times fail to deliver what is promised and expected. Mamma Santina remains one of the few example of typical aeolian restaurant, a place where the hospitality is still sacred and the smiles of the people working there are truly genuine. Immediately you feel like at home, guests at a friend’s house more than customers. Mario (the owner and chef) and Eleonora will tempt you immediately with delicatessen which are results of years of passion, research and love for this job. We had a mix of courses: amongst the starters the parmigiana di alici was outstanding, I had squid with pasta as main course, octopus Salina style, tuna parmigiana which was delicious. Fresh capers’ salad was also incredibly tasty! There were a dozen more things that I would have liked to try, so choice wax really hard. Up to this point everything is normal: a nice place, excellent cuisine, all rare but not unique. What made this experience a triumph was what happened afterwards: they have chilli pepper plants all along the edge of the restaurant terrace and one of my guests love chili pepper. We discussed what could have been the strongest one and Eleonora introduced us to Thomas, an Indian gentleman that takes care of these plants. You could sense his love for them. He carefully chose one, picked it and prepared it for us, mincing it in a cream with onion, garlic and olive oil. My friend tried it and even the gentleman of the table next to us had a go at it. It was really powerful! We than had a lovely chat with our neighbours sipping an homemade citrus liqueur. We realised that this restaurant is framed inside an hotel so we asked to see one of the rooms and it was so lovely that my friends booked it for next year holiday. I could write rivers of words about this place but I won’t do it, I will simply suggest for you to experience it like we did, and ask yourself if your are dreaming or not. Well done to all the staff and in particular to Mario, Eleonora and Thomas for the lovey experience we have had."
