"Like many businesses in small Abruzzan towns, days and hours of operation for il Leprotto are difficult to pin down. At present, they are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday for lunch, Friday and Saturday for dinner, and otherwise on occasion. Having heard that agriturismos are one of the best ways to experience local Abruzzan cuisine and having stayed nearby, we kept an eye out for the somewhat foreboding front gate to be open when we drove by each day. It just so happened that on Labor Day (May 1st), they were open for lunch. Like everything in the area, if you see it open, go immediately as you may not have the opportunity again. The place was absolutely packed with locals. The room was loud, cheerful, and full of energy. Meals were prix fixe and for only 25 euros each (no charge for our 3-year-old), we were served on of the best and definitely the most authentic meal of our stay in Pettorano. The dining area is a decently sized room attached to the front of the operating family's house, that seats about 75. It has a somewhat rustic charm, and definitely gives the feel that you are a guest of the family. The food and wine was served in fast order and large, unlimited quantites by family. We were served 5 or 6 courses with 3-4 selections per course (and they bring everything--no questions, no decisions). Most memorable were the bean antipasti and main meat dishes. The main dishes were all local game--stewed venison, roasted boar and potatoes, and barbecued rabbit. There were a few items that, to our American palates, were a bit too adventurous (like the veal and tripe bruschetti). However, with all the food that comes to the table there is plenty of selection and no way to possibly eat everything anyway. As an aside, the family has an impressive collection of animals on display outside--mostly rare and exotic birds like ornate chickens from Madagascar, giant doves, peacocks, on and on. A walk through the sanctuary makes for an enjoyable finish to the experience."
