"I went to Arem on a Sunday evening after purchasing a Groupon coupon for an art class, a cocktail, two tapas appetizers and a glass of wine. The restaurant itself is beautiful and the art class and everything related to it were wonderful. The art instructor was great and we had a wonderful time. Everything started off well, despite there being a marked lack of a hostess or any welcome, which was confusing because the restaurant is located at the end of a long corridor in an industrial building. A big red flag about the problems to come.We finally figured out who the staff was and had them seat us. After a lot of waiting around, they gave us a cocktail and warmly welcomed us. Then, they went for a smoke break right outside the window, came back inside and virtually disappeared. They occasionally came back to enthusiastically serve us our two appetizers. There were to be one hot and one cold appetizer. Both were cold. The portions were extremely small and the appetizers themselves were extremely unimpressive. Some cold rice and spices on a Chinese spoon. As soon as the food was served, they would retreat to the Mystery Room again, and the poor drawing instructor was left alone with twelve hungry, thirsty customers who were never given a chance to order anything.Throughout the night, a trio at the bar would loudly call out for the art teacher’s attention while she was busy with other paying customers. It was clear they knew her personally. It was also clear that they personally knew the bar owner since they would routinely go behind the bar to loudly refill their own drinks and show off their bartending skills to each other. At some point, one of the ladies taking the class with us took the opportunity to go up to the lady behind the bar and ask her for a drink. The lady behind the bar laughed and told her “Oh no, I don’t work here.” The two of us, the lady who wanted a drink, and three more customers all discussed how strange and unprofessional it was that there was no one around to help us.We were thirsty, hadn’t been served anything since the welcome cocktail. We went to check the kitchen, and saw that it was completely closed for the night. It was 7:30pm on a Sunday. The only group that had been there when we had arrived had left, and they had shut the whole thing down, and locked themselves in a separate room. There was literally not a single server to be seen for over an hour. It was like a ghost town, we thought they had left. All the guests were just looking around, and then at each other, confused. It was eerie.By the end of the night, our drawings were done, and this poor teacher was left serving us our promised glass of wine alone, eventually helped by the giggling friend-of-the-owner-personal-bartender who had been sitting at the bar. After that, the instructor disappeared too.Confused and left completely alone in the big restaurant, we eventually concluded that the evening was over, said goodbye to the other confused couples who had participated in the activity, and left. A waiter quickly caught up with us to thank us, his first apparition in a long time. Perhaps they have a security camera in the Mystery Room. It could have come in handy when there were 12 hungry, thirsty people willing to give them their business in their dining hall.Really though, what’s the point of throwing a Groupon event with two tiny appetizers as a teaser, if there isn’t anybody to order food from all night? Don’t you want to make money? Don’t you know how this works?My advice to Arem’s managers: Fire all your staff, then fire yourself. This may seem harsh, but there is no way any restaurant staff is this invisible – literally inexistent – and in consequence, unprofessional, without it having been allowed, enabled, or at least tolerated by management. And this may be a presumption, but don’t hire your friends. And definitely don’t let them serve themselves during an event, while there is no one there to serve your customers. If I’m wrong about this, and this was just a very, very bad night – which happens to everyone – you at least have to admit that there was very, very bad supervision, and that whoever was in charge majorly screwed up and possibly cost you hundreds of dollars in potential orders. For our part, we left hungry and spent 60$+ at a small Filipino restaurant next door."
