I have not been back to Amarante in 20 years. Coming back to the café and being welcome by the new owner, Jean Pedro, and all his amazing staff, was like coming home. There is an old style, old school feel to this place and the food is cooked with love and care. I was actually surprised at the style and size of this bar as it looks more like one you’d find in a major city centre as opposed to a smallish town in Northern Portugal. The interior is very smart and there is lots of room to sit inside or al fresco; or you can even perch at the bar. When the weather conditions is nice you can also be served outside, and for your baby or toddler, there is a child's chair. The seat / dining area invites you to linger and extensively indulge, and there's a counter where you can sit down and taste.
