This is an historic pub, with low beams, an inglenook fireplace with a proper wood fire, and local real ales, kept well. The landlord and the staff are all friendly and welcoming. Our room was in the oldest part of the pub, but it was spacious and sensitively refurbished, with a good-sized en-suite bathroom. Unfortunately this pub seems to have fallen into the trend of adding a ’discretionary service charge’ on to the bill, whether you like it or not. Few people would not want to ask for the bill to be revised, so you are effectively forced into it. It should be my choice whether I should tip. I would not return here for this reason.
