"I should begin this review by saying that we were presented to the owners of casa zaldierna, pilli and antonio, by a mutual friend who lives in ezcaray. we went to lunch and stayed for three days, so was the quality of the food and the warm welcome we received. we started lunch in Spain. before lunch we chatted in the bar and looked at Vermouth with some very good Spanish selections from small producers. the lunch itself concentrated on seasonal and hyperlocal products: Boletus-Pilz (beforeday of a type in the village researched) slightly groomed in olive oil and garlic; sweet paprika (again from a garden in the village) brewed and served with a fresh poliached egg. the main course with a massive porterhouse steak (again, locally) cooked by antonio over a wood fire. in this restaurant there is a serious ceremony around the bark. antonio first brings the cut - in this case a beautifully marbled, super thick porterhouse - to present at the table. he then cooks it over a huge, wood-fired grill. it came a perfect medium wheel with delicious crust. memorable. Given the situation of zaldierna in the region rioja, the wine list is good and everyone working in the casa zaldierna is very good about the producers and vintages and more than in the position to show them in the right direction. all in all this place is a great foundation and we will be regular visitors."
