We somehow mist the turn to farewell splitt, got there on the way back from wharariki beach. From sandy/stone beach walking up to the dunes.... just amazing, further in the dunes your suddenly surrounded by white sand everywhere, like your in a dessert. Beautiful view overlooking Farewell Spit, great location for a cafe. Was quite busy when we visited for lunch, although our toasted sandwiches came in reasonable time, the pie took a little longer. Food was fine, other menu items on the pricier side but to be expected so far out from a major township.
Nice little cafe right out at the start of Farewell Spit. The service was awesome with a friendly staff member making everything nice. Coffee and cake was good but a bit expensive. I guess you can understand it given this is quite remote but still would be better if prices were a big lower. The views are stunning and it's a great place to grab some human fuel before setting off on a walk. No dogs allowed out here due to DOC from what I understand which is a bit unfortunate too.
My wife and I stopped here during our honeymoon. The view is AMAZING. Especially during tidal activity. We watched the tide come in and were amazed at how the landscape changed. It is a nice cafe with good coffee to warm you up after a trek in the cold. The snacks are decent too. There is good information on the spit and a large satellite view map. Bathrooms are also available and decent.
This was a great little place to grab a bite before heading down to walk the Spit. Surprisingly good selection of food and drink and I thoroughly enjoyed my order of the scallop pie and the organic ginger beer. They have al-fresco dining overlooking the spit, so you get a great view with your meal. I had the little side salad that came w/my pie and it was fantastically verdant and tasty. The gal that took my order at the counter was also very nice and explained the menu to me when I had questions. All in all, a definite rec to make a stop before or after your visit to the Spit!
