grotto to all effects, very characteristic place with walls made of rocks of not recent epochs. very good the meats served in the appetizers along with some under oil and salt cake, excellent the first, lazzoccheri and taglialini to the ragù of conghiale, both brushed. super content prices, in two inclusive of dessert and water and wine of the house. a greeting to the waiter, father of the owner, a super friendly per... We arrived on a beautiful day driving through Cuveglio to Vergobbio. After driving and walking we came to the Grotto S Anna. We were made very welcome by the chef. We drank cold water frizzante. We had a good starter of prosciutto and sweet melon. This was followed by very tasteful pasta. We were pleased by this restaurant which was busy at lunchtime. Afterwards we climbed the steps of the adjacent church Saint Anna. A delightful view across the verdant town and distant mountains awaited us. After a long stroll in the sunshine we found to my amazement the house of my great uncle that I last visited 50 years ago!!
Hidden, to access follow the signs through a cobblestone street; this place was used as a brewery by the monks in the XVIII century because here was part of a former hermitage. There is a “via crucis” (stations of the cross) that leads to a deconsecrated church at the top of the hill; pity about the frescoes of the stations, mostly damaged due time passing and the repaint wasn’t exactly the best way to preserve such a religious heritage that dates from centuries. Pretty is the waterfall creek aside (torrente Gottardo) and since the begining of the former century it was already a restaurant named Gottardo (can see it through an old picture). There are two dining rooms inside the restaurant; a regular one (like any other at the entrance) and mountain side (grotto) after the kitchen. If can cope with humidity, suggest to meal in the grotto dining room, is particular and has a running creek by the rock (not visible). Is possible to eat at the gazebo outside if wanted. We had an antipasto vegetariano (slices of grilled eggplant, zucchini, chicory and one ball of mozzarella 9.00); green dumplings made with chicory and cod (6.50) very homemade; grilled seafood (27.50). As written and shown in the pictures posted by fellow reviewers, food is simple so don’t expect gourmet style dishes; portions were quite abundant. A different and unpretentious place to have a homey unpretentious meal.
Charming place with awesome staff. Fresh homemade food and well cooked. Good proportion. Nice wine selection. Perfecto !
