"Another place that was recommended to me was Kazoku, especially for the Ramen. So, one afternoon whilst rushing between various worksites, I dropped into Kazoku for what I hoped was decent Ramen. The restaurant itself wasn't just a place that happened to serve Ramen.. it's actually specifically listed out on their marquee.Which is why I'm confused as to why I had such mediocre food. So, I don't normally talk about price, but in this case I kind of have to. A typical bowl of Ramen down at Kazoku is around the $14 - $15 mark. A pretty good bowl of Ramen at Santouka is around the same price.. maybe a buck or so more. What's the problem? The difference is that the bowl of Ramen made at Santouka is not a package of premade noodles heated up and served with an average soup base. Santouka has chefs that are formally trained. Most places charging this price have noodles are made in house, and in most cases the soups are made from scratch first thing in the morning and have that lovely gooey texture that comes from the boiling of soft animal bone.I think worst of all is that no other Ramen place I've ever been to has served a tasteless, half of a hard boiled egg as a Ramen egg. Ramen eggs, as far as I know, are soft boiled eggs with a runny yolk, and are seasoned overnight though a cold bath/solution. And before you say that nobody around Winnipeg knows how to do that, it's an egg that's soft boiled... you have the skill and technology. Besides, if the chef at The Sovereign Room in Thunder Bay, ON can make these eggs, there is really no excuse for chefs in larger urban areas like Winnipeg. To be perfectly clear, the food itself wasn't the worst I've ever eaten, but for a place that specializes in Ramen to serve something that I can get from a 7/11 Noodle Bar is disappointing.I think for the $14 - $15 a bowl, unless you absolutely have to have something that resembles Ramen, you'd be better off having a bowl of noodle soup at one of the many good Vietnamese places in town."
