We discovered the Portaliano restaurant whilst out walking one evening, and what a find. We didn't book but we were quickly offered a table for 2, despite it being very busy Service was quick, polite and efficient The menu is not huge but covers all tastes. What António Marques doesn't like about Martins & Capelinha Lda:
At Portaliano the food was cooked adequately. But the fusion flavours were mixed in bad ways that did not work. E.g.the gyoza with smoked sausage and jam. Other dishes like the meatballs in white sauce with raisins and nuts ! were bland and tasteless. The chef really needs to rethink the combinations. The pizza was okay but a little boring. What a refreshing change from the rather dull selection at many of Funchal eateries. 3 of us went for lunch and the food was excellent. A light and modern small bistro with friendly helpful staff. Our choices of veggie pizza, prawn risotto and cottage cheese with spinach ravioli was the perfect lunch with a bottle of Portuguese fizz followed by dessert, could not have been better. There was a good menu with Italian and Portuguese options. Highly recommended and we will return.

A must visit restaurant when in Funchal

We couldn't get a table at the restaurant we had planned so passed this on our search for another. Service was very friendly and polite. Meals home cooked and very reasonable. We had vegetable lasagne, chicken pizza and Portuguese steak. All lovely and would definitely go back again. Can't recommend enough!
Looks very new and functions very well. Not overly busy or loud, but great to pop in for lunch. I had a large pizza which was nice albeit slightly too much cheese, but I think that's the Madeira style from what I've seen. Would go back if looking for somewhere for lunch nearby.
